Comment: I have a HP Scanjet 3300C. I am running a AMD K-62 500 on a FIC VA-503+ M/B. The OS is Windows ME. When I try to install the software for the scanner, Windows tells me that setup was unable to turn on my USB ports. It also says that i need to turn them on in Bios. Well i went into Bios and USB is enabled. This is bothering me. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)For whatever reason, when I unplugged the scanner's USB cable from my PC (using it's own port) and plugged it into my USB Hub...the darn thing worked! Actually worked as in not locking up after each scan. I scanned and scanned...I was amazed. I'm not saying to run out and buy a $29 hub...maybe you could borrow someone's and try it out first...just a thought.

Reply: (edit) I have the unproved theory that HP drivers do not work well in Windows ME. Go START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>IMAGING and let Windows ME detect the scanner and install Microsoft drivers. (My scanner was an HP 5200C however). This solved the problem for me.

Reply: (edit)This is error does not appear because of the usbport. If you install the scanner from the english-folder on the cd the scanner will be installed and work

Reply: (edit)Click on local disk C. Click Scanjet, then on precision scanjet icon. Right click on multi-collored icon of scannerand send shortcut to desktop. My icon in 4100c is hpprsclt. You can work the scanner this way. HP is the worst in providing proper drivers.

Reply: (edit)Thank you HOD, and thank you! I had similar problems with a Scanjet 4200C: "unable to turn on your USB port". What happened was I quit the original attempt to install the software, so I could terminate all open apps. Trouble is, the message that tells you to do that, doesn't tell you how to get back and install the software afterward! Well, your simple solution--running setup from the English folder in the CD--worked perfectly. I had been trying to run it from the basic CD level (why is it located in two places?). ---
