Comment:

i installed printer HP Deskjet 850C on a small business server. The drivers for Server 2003, Windows XP & Windows 2000 were on the server 2003 compact disk. i was able to install the drivers for windows NT 4 from the NT4 CD. When i tried searching the Windows ME CD i was unable find the files.
I tried extracting driver5,6,7.cabs and searching the win9x.cabs but i was unable to find the files. i then went to HP's website. i was unable to download a file for winME or Win98 as it said the files were on the CD. i then downloaded the win95 version and extracted the files to a temp directory, but i tried to browse to these files, it said it couldn't find files in thst directory that related to my hardware. i was able to install the printer on the local winME machine, but you can't just copy files across to the system32 directory, because you need the setup inf file that puts those files in the correct directory, so that process registers itself with AD. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank-you in advance

What are you trying to do?

Start at the beginning with the facts laid out simply and logically. State your problem and then slowly progress to where you want to go and what you want to achieve.

Me, I don't understand garbled posts too well. Sorry.

Assuming you're installing drivers for all OS's because you have client machines for all, then you haven't chosen an appropriate printer. Deskjets are certainly not the right type of printers for high volume printing, especially when it involves running servers with AD.

The drivers are on the ME CD, you just need to install the printer properly, pointing to the CD for drivers when asked.

I think you're really making things difficult for yourself.

Well I'm sorry if i didn't say enough for either of you to understand. Maybe i wrote too much.
I have an HP Deskjet 850 C attached to a windows server 2003 machine. When you share the printer on the network it talks about additional drivers in the sharing tab. The XP, 2000 & 2003 drivers were installed by default. when i clicked NT 4.0 i was prompted for the CD, and the drivers were added easily. When i did the win 9.x and ME again i was prompted for the CD, but it did not find any printer drivers. I had the idea that the drivers must be in the cab files, which is why they were not found. But there was no labeling like to identify the printer drivers. If i attach the printer locally to a windows Me machine then the drivrs are extracted to the local machine. But if you want to do print sharing on the server, then you need to do something else.

I believe the solution to my problem is as follows
Delete the printer files on the windows ME machine by removing the printer and the files from system32
Making sure the setup files are not on the winME machine, try to set the printer up again on the ME machine. i should be promted to insert the windows ME CD-Rom. Click OK without inserting the CDROM so it doesn't find the files, i will then be prompted to find the setup file. Note this file, say its hplj.inf. Cancel setup. Locate this file on the CD, extract it out of the cab files. Open it with notepad and note the files listed in it which must be copied into the system 32 direvtory. There maybe three files, a dll, a sys and a hlp file. Copy these three files and the inf to the windows server machine. Go back to adding additional drivrs in the share, and point to the location of this inf. This came from a guy who does third line software support in IT. The alternative, was to locate a driver disk on ebay or anywhere else on the internet. I don't have time to try his advice right now, but it seems the best advice so far.
There are times when i wish i was brainless....

According to HP, "The most current driver for your printer is already integrated into Windows 98/Me and it is already on every Windows 98/Me PC."

So far we got...

"When i did the win 9.x and ME again i was prompted for the CD, but it did not find any printer drivers. I had the idea that the drivers must be in the cab files, which is why they were not found."

Jam's response covers that one.

"But there was no labeling like to identify the printer drivers."

No, the nearest thing you're going to get to that is googling the following MS article numbers and painstakingly pick out printer/printing related drivers and files. Driver files like LPT.VXD.

272608
272610
272612
272634

"If i attach the printer locally to a windows Me machine then the drivrs are extracted to the local machine. But if you want to do print sharing on the server, then you need to do something else."

Well worth thinking about. It's not likely to be it, but it could be something as dumb as adjusting the Network >> File and Print Sharing in ME.

The tech's advice sounds good and plausible but I can't help feel there's a simpler route for you to go down.
