HP 8200 Cd Burner and Win ME Problem

I recently bought a compaq laptop with Win ME, my HP 8200 cd burner(usb) is having problems. Specifically, after upgrading necessary software, when I try to burn a cd, the first track selected to burn will not play (on any system - car, portable cd, cdrom but it is visable on displays). Tracks 2+ can be heard. I've contacted HP about this but have not heard back from them. Any assistance is appreciated.
