Hello all, I know this question been around before, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as how to block pop ups and banner ads without a program you download. I remember reading but not paying that much attention to a way to stop the ads with your hosts file. I know nothing about the host file or how to set it up to block pop ups. If someone does know what I meen and doesn't mind a little typing I would be very happy and thankful if someone would share this knowledge with me.
John....

hello
there are some good sights with lists to put in the host file to block adds ans other unwanteds.they will explain how in the sight.
allso some of the p2p sights had a good list for this. and i posted one in the security virus forum a search there might just fined you the good list i use with the how to.
you can block them in internet explorer in restricted sights.a program called spy sights has a good list fot there.

This does spyware thru the registry. Some other links on the page. Doesn't do pop-ups.

Hi John;
Go to this site to learn how to set up and use a hosts file.
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/
You can download an extensive list to add to your host files from there also.
Pretty easy to do.Good luck.

You can get a ready made HOSTS file from the writers of SPYBOT....
http://security.kolla.de/Or from the KazaaLite people......
download the HOSTS file.Open the zipped HOSTS file to find a 'read me' notepad file, and the 'HOSTS' file. This 'HOSTS' file blocks the pop-up's that come from the bugs that could not be removed from the program. For the 'HOSTS' file to work it needs to be copied into the Windows directory.
To get there go to MY COMPUTER - C: DRIVE - WINDOWS, then copy & paste the 'HOSTS' file only into that directory (not the read me as-well). Be sure not to copy it into another file or folder.
Pop-up's will be blocked from the following sites :-# localhost: Needs to stay like this to work

A grand thanks thanks to Mr. Randy, the address he provided (ttp://www.accs-net.com/hosts/) does stop the POP-UPS.
Anyway, I'm still amazing why it can stop the pop-ups. I supposed some softare hide in my PC and work as before, since my computer doesn't run excellent as before: It runs more slowly and some network game frequently be disconnected un-expected.
Great thanks to the developpers as well.
