this program really sucks up the computer performance, is very slow to load while playing songs or video

If you want to remove the media player go into:

START
>>> SETTINGS
>>> CONTROLL_PANEL
>>> ADD/REMOVE_PROGRAMS
>>> CLICK_ON_THE_WINDOWS_SETUP_TAB
>>> DOUBLE_CLICK_ON_MULTIMEDIA
>>> UNCHECK_THE_BOX_NEXT_TO_MEDIA_PLAYER

Thanks Ryan. I too would prefer not to use this program, my sound card came with software which I think can do the job just as well.

Ryan, do you happen to know why Media Player 7 couldn't "read" the artist and title info on some of my CDs, whereas the Windows 95 OSR2 version of Media Player could read them all. This really annoyed me because I had to enter the titles manually, and still can't enter the artist.

Thanks in advance.

No need to remove Media player 7 as you still have mediaplayer 6.4 ,its in \Program Files\Windows Media player\ but its named Mplayer2 simply click it and go to the view-options-formats and check the formats you wish to use with media player2 instead of mplayer7.

Hi,
According to this ME tip I have in front of
me, Windows ME won't let you remove WMP7. But
you can change back to WMP6 by doing the
following:
1. Open a MS-DOS window (Start>Programs>Accessories-MS-DOS Prompt
2. In the MS-DOS window type:
ren c:\progra~1\window~1\wmplayer.exe wmplayer.$$$ and press [Enter]
This will make a backup copy of WMP 7
3. type: copy c:\progra~1\window~1\mplayer2.exe c:\progra~1\window~1\wmplayer.exe and press [Enter]
According to this tip that will do it. If you
want to change backto WMP 7, copy wmplayer.$$$ over wmplayer.exe

I have also problems with windows media player 7. I kept it there, loaded WINAMP and maximus CD and made those as default applications for my music files. I am completely ignoring WMP7 now.

I wouldn't recommend removing W(i)mp 7, but has anyone noticed when you setup the proggie, that there's a feature that says something about catalogueing and sending back information about the media that you are watching..
Hmm, Bigbrother might be watching the poor souls that just press OK.
anyway, the reason wimp takes so long to open, is because it somehow keeps track of what you are watching, essentially this is annoying because if you download for example an mpeg clip, and you stop the dl halfway, and then decide you want to watch what you have downloaded partially, wimp will make an index of the file that will tell wimp when you open the clip next time, how long it is, and so on. but what if you decide to go ahead and DL the rest of the file..
well, then when you open the clip, wimp will still think you only have part of the clip, eventhough you might have the whole clip, and it wont allow you to fast forward longer than the first clip was... that sucks!

as for the subject of this forum, I recommend you hold down shift and then rightclick on some mediatypes like mpg or avi, and then you choose to always open them with mplayer2.exe instead of wimp.. (wimp is actually just a fancy frontend to mplayer2 with some directX extensions for the sound)
also, make sure you get winamp or the equivalent, and open your wav's and mp3's with that.. (but not your avi's or mpg's coz most likely it won't work!!!)

hope I helped ya out.
sincerely FZ Kuno

I've tried removing WMP7 also with no success. I've gone through all of the above recommendations and still the thing pops up every time I try to access a media file. So annoying! I couldn't find the MS-DOS prompt by going through the start menu as was mentioned above. Please someone help, because I can't access any media whatsoever with this thing.

Thanks,
Chad

Hi

I am an A+ Certified tech working @ Compaq for years and at home I have W-ME running on my machine but WMP7 is really annoying even with a 900-Mhz system I have and 256-Mb of SDRAM and a 32-Mb TNT Video card, WMP7 is still a drag on my performance. I use the old player and also use Rio Port Audio manager which gives me much nicer interface and it rips CDs too. I know most of the tricks & secrets out there to know about Window but really would like to find out how to get rid of WMP7 without damaging the system files.
