I am thinking about getting a new computer that will come with Win XP pre-installed. How can I move all my current files and programs to the new system from the old one? Currently using Win ME.

Thanks for help.

put your old HD in the new system as a slave and copy the files. You WILL ahve to reinstall the programs but, all data files should be fine. You DO NOT want to use ghoost in this case as the HW is different (not to mention the OS's).

The simple way of doing it (if you have both systems around at the same time) is through Direct Cable Connection. Although very slow, it's very simple and if you havent already got a cable, they're very cheap.
You could network the 2 systems with USB or ethernet (faster but more expensive to set up)

hello
dont use the ubs to conect two computers you will blow both ubs ports.
you should use a duble ended parell printer cable it have to male ends.there under 20.00 bucks canadian.or you can use a faster duble ended serial cable but there about 3 times as much money.
if they both have the same i.link like (ieee 1394) they must have the same no. you could do that but duble check on the i.link
have a nice day

Setting up a home network would be easiest way if you have Ethernet on both, if not I would go with installing it in new puter as secondary HDD and Drag-N-Drop til the cows come home. LOL Parallel port would be excruciatingly slow. You can Network with USB 2.0 (only 2.0) but you have to have a USB to USB Adapter and cables. Much cheaper to get two Ethernet 10/100 cards. And safer.

Thanks, and another question. Then if I install the old HD in the new computer as slave, could I dual boot and run either OS?

That might be good because I don't know if there is a XP compatible driver for my scanner.

I don't think so. In Fact, I am not sure, but I don't know for certain that you can just plug it in and see it. You might be able to fdisk it and set it up to dual boot? But I am not sure, that may format the drive!! I know I have swapped HDDs several times, but that was master to master or slave to slave, and they were actually identical drives (backups).

Got a zip drive or CDRW, or thinking of getting one?
Another option

Windows XP has a neat utility called something like "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". It's in System Tools. You create a couple of floppies on your new machine using the Wizard and put those onto the old machine. The Wizard will collect all the settings and files that you can specify and saves them into a folder. Then just move the files from the old to the new and the Wizard puts everything in the right places. I did it a couple of months back for my daughter's new Dell notebook and the Wizard collected over 200 megs of stuff. I just created a temporary folder on the desktop of each computer and used the ir port to move everything. I suggest the Direct Cable Connection if you are moving from a desktop to another computer.

I was just gonna say that marcus...
If you have a CD burner or zipdisk you can easily move all your data. Dont bother with software folders. It might not work with XP and it most of it requires you run the installation from teh cd or the setup executable file.

Dual boot,
No easy way to do this since your buying a computer with xp already installed.
You can slave the old drive to the new machine. You can install some boot manager software to let you boot one or the other. This gets complicated and you can possibly damage your operating system in the process. Depending on where your XP OS is located i wouldnt risk it.
I would instead slave the old drive/format it and use it for data storage.

Remember that old program in Dos called Interlink? When used with a program like Xtree it was real easy to tag and move files from one computer to another. Does anybody know if that "Interlink" cable would work. I made one a long time ago and still have it. I think I have the pinout for it if anybody is interested.

Thanks everyone.

I think what I will do is the network thing. That way if one goes down, I still have the other as a backup. Yes, I am addicted to the computer!! Would have serious problem without one.
