Comment: I have a packard bell pc which comes with a recovery system.The operating system that comes with it is windows ME.I would like to downsize it to windows 98.Can anyone tell me how to go about doing it?Thanx

Reply: (edit)The thing is,the recovery system is in a hidden sector of the hard drive.When i format C drive and restart the pc,it asks for the recovery system floppy. How do i go about installing win 98 without having to delete the hidden sector.My pc is still under warrenty so i dun want to delete that in case the warranty becomes void

Reply: (edit)If your recovery setup is on another partition (hidden sector?) you should be able to install windows 98 on the primary partition (C:)without affecting it.
Use Fdisk to view your partitions. If the system recovery is on D: you should be OK installing 98 on C after format.

Reply: (edit)The recovery setup in D drive but that drive is hidden,meaning i can't see it or access it. I can't format the C drive just by clicking it and choosing the format option.A dialogue box will pop out saying that i can't format C drive cos the windows folder is in there. I have to reboot the pc and install the floppy that came with the pc.Then there are a number of options for me to choose from,one of them including format. After i format though,i have no idea how to install win 98 cos when i restart the pc, it asks me for that floppy even though i haf inserted the windows cd. By the way,it is a windows98 second edition cd.Will it affect anything? A technician who once came to fix my pc told me that i have to use the second edition cd to downsize but never did tell me how.

Reply: (edit)Its good the drive is hidden so you cant delete it. Of course you cant format the c drive when your in windows. Forget about the floppy that came with the pc it will only help you install windows me again.www.bootdisk.com get a real windows me boot disk. where did you get this windows 98 cd? You better be sure its a full version of windows 98 and not some kind of restore cd or recovery discs. if it is you wont be able to do it. stick in the floppy you get from bootdisk.com restart the pc.
at the a prompt type in [format c:] now windows me will be deleted. restart the computer choose starting windows with cdrom support. at the a prompt change to the cdrom drive letter like F: then type in setup.exe after you put the windows 98 cd in the cd drive. your 98 will install.
all your files are going to get erased so you better save them to floppies.

Thanx for all the help!!It's been really useful and i'm really glad that someone could help me out..
