I have a computer that someone enable the content adivsor on. I can't disable it because I don't know the password. Does anyone know a way around this? I can't browse to any websites.

Thanks,

RD

Try this;

Click start, run, type in REGEDIT,click ok, this opens registry editor.Click + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,+ in front of SOFTWARE,+ in front of Microsoft,+ in front of Windows,+ in front of Current Version,+ in front of Policies, Click Ratings,look to right, Click line below Default,press delete,enter. Leave default line only in right pane.Close registry editor.Next click start,find files and folders,type "ratings.pol". When this file is found,delete it.This should remove the password that's been set,and leave content advisor fully operable.

The information given to RD by TheKid is freely accessible on the internet in many, many places. If a parent it trying to use content advisor to limit his child's access to the internet, be warned. This may not be the best idea as it is *easily* disabled.

This problem occurs frequently in internet explorer and I don't think we should be limited on the information we give out on how to fix it as it is a legitimate problem.

... besides... if it is a kid... at least he had the bright to fix it himself. That sort of perseverance should be rewarded:)

I wasn`t trying to start an argument or comdemn anyone especially "The Kid" as he is a very helpful person. Rather, it was just an observation. Sorry if I offended anyone

The thing is..

Type in "disable content advisor" at google and you will find millions of hits to the info. Posting it here makes no difference one way or another.

The other thing is..

How many of us have lost or forgotten a password? Thank god guys like thekid remember the steps and post the instructions when we ask.

If the parents did set this password they will know when they find that its been changed.

If the original poster is a kid trying to get around the parents block.. remember to select something else in regedit so when your parents type it in to the run box they dont find it.

Regedit usually expands the last place you were. And if the parents ask why the password has been changed.. remember to tell them its probably a windows bug :).

I dont have kids but i understand where fitzy is coming from. The truth is.. times are changing and no matter what you do aside from cutting the phone & cable lines and locking the kid to a radiator they will be exposed to everything on the net sooner or later. Instead of building a better hacker out of your kid as he breaks one password after another.. take the time to explain viruses, dialers, spyware and anything else that miht ruin there computer or give away personal information.

Hi. I don't know why I'll get an error message saying " Please check your Content Advisor for missing information.... " each time I clicked the Internet Explorer. I'm getting very irritated by that because I've to retype the supervisor password in the internet options before I can really surf the net. Is there anyway to help me please? I've even changed the "ratings.pol" to "ratings.old" as recommended but it doesn't help at all. There was a time when the error message doesn't pop up anymore but it started again recently. I really really don't know why. Please help ... Thanx ...
