hello, i used to defrag about once a week, but i read somewhere that modern pcs only need to be defragged maybe 2 or 3 times a year. and that too much defrag can actually slow down ur pc and degrade the hard drive is once a week too much?

To my customers, I recommend.... Running Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and Defrag once a month, if you uninstall a large program, or delete a large amount of files,run defrag after that.

Analyze is one of the functions on disk defrag.If it says it is not needed don't do it. If it says you should, do it. Anyone that says it will slow you down is an idiot.

I set the maintenance in system tools. It does it automatically every evening between 12 and 3 AM.

Until you reach at least 10% fragmentation,it's basically pointless to run it.... Al,every night is definitely overkill.

The only thing that counts is the usage of the PC.When you save and then delete files,install and uninstall programs continually,then you need to defrag more often. I do it every two months and I don't really see any big difference in performance... (I saw that only at a friend's PC that he didn't know that there was such a thing as defrag after one year of usage)
