Well

You could just format it, and reinstall what ever OS you want to use from scratch. You would loose everything on it.

If you have the ME CD, you could over install ME back onto it, to see if that sorts it.

You could try to install Win 95 / 98 over the top of it. You need to delete the windows version data first.

Unless you can get into windows, and you didn't install off of a clean install you won't be able to uninstall. Have you tried safe mode (F8 after the BIOS POST)

At what point does it stop loading. Is it still in the DOS enviroment, or has it loaded the desktop?

Not unless you can get back into windows, in which case, as long as when it was over installed you selected "save configuration data" you can go to add / remove programs and click on Windows ME

Uninstalling Win me is one the best decisions you'll make. I went for a clean disk install win98 and restore files from backup its too risky to do otherwise

I would also like to uninstall Windows ME. I purchased an HP with ME loaded and want to put 98 on. I have the 98 disk/cd, but there is no option in Add/Remove to get rid of ME. format c: is not accepted on a DOS prompt and the install of 98 stops when it recognizes an existing OS. I will re-try all the methods above, but if there are any others, I'd appreciate any help.

It seems as though Everyone here is telling people that to Uninstall Windows Me, you have to use the Add/Remove Box in the control panel. What happened if during installation, you selected I do not wish to Save my system files (Because you thought that Windows me, would be a great program). How do you install it then, obviosuly we are a first, because on the Microsoft website there is no article on how to do it to!

I am interested in the file name ME uses to build and use during the uninstall process. Understand there is an editor that will tell U if the file is usable before the uninstall is processed any help here??

For those trying to install 98 with a startup kit FD & CD. U can force Setup 2 use your existing Windows dir by renaming Win.com & Winver.exe. Then run startup from the C: This way Setup doesn't know U have a previous Win ver and it will convert all programs in the startup folder. Works for 3.1 & 95. Used this many times without having an upgrade CD. Also helpful to copy the Win 95/98 folder from your CD to your HDD then use it to reload 95 or 98.

Haven't tried it going back 2 98 from ME. But soon will!!

A word of advice. DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS ME!! I went to the "add remove program" and clicked on windows millenium. I clicking on a few options, the program stated that it to perform a scan before removing the program. The computer started scanning at 3:00 P.M. MST and it is still scanning at 10:30 P.M. Boy was I a sucker for trying this program.

I have also purchased a new computer with WinME preloaded and would like to switch to Win98. I would like to do this without formating.

Does anyone know an easy process?

The best, and most full-proof way (worked for me), is to debug the HD and start from scratch. ME's hybrid FAT/NTFS scheme is somewhat unforgiving. If you just FDISK/FORMAT, an ME partition can potentially stick. Thus causing MS' plague of nothing but headaches.
