Our company is setting up a VPN for us to connect to the company intranet via our broadband Internet ISPs (Cable/DSL, etc.) I and others in my company have WinME on our machines at home. But the company's instructions are for Win2000 that we have on our company computers. The only thing that seems to come close in WinME is dial-up networking and that is a non-starter for this purpose. I am seeking a WinME version of the following VPN access installation instructions that our company gave us for our Win2000 machines -- Would like to have a WinME version for the following instructions:

Instructions for Windows 2000 Users

1. Dial in to the [COMPANY] network, or if you are at the [COMPANY] office in [Company HQ, USA], connect to the Local Area Network as you normally would.

2. Select Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network & Dialup connections. Click Make new connection and then click Next.

3. Select Connect to a private network through the Internet. Click Next.

4. Select Do not dial the initial connection, and select Next.

5. Enter “[VPN domain name],” and select Next.

6. Select For all users, and select Next.

7. Enter a name for the [COMPANY]-VPN connection and choose whether or not to have the program place a shortcut on your desktop. Choose Finish.

8. Next, you will need to set up the properties for the VPN connection. In the Network and Dial Up Connections window, right click on the icon for your VPN connection, and choose Properties. The Properties dialog box will appear. Select the Networking tab, highlight the Internet Protocol component, and select the Properties button.

9. Configure the TCP/IP properties as shown below.

10. Select the Advanced button and choose the WINS tab. Choose the Add button, and enter the WINS addresses below. Choose OK when you are done.

11. Confirm that the settings on the Security tab are configured as shown below.

12. Choose OK. Your VPN configuration should be complete.

Win me certainly does support a VPN. This is how many DSL set-ups work(including mine). It (VPN support) may have to be turned on first, or rather installed for the options you need to work. this would be accomplished by adding the components using the add/remove programs programs section of the control panel. Then click on windows set up and check the box for VPN(virtual private networking) and install all components. This may allow you to use the Win 2000 instructions.

Jimi:

I found and checked the VPN check box under the Details in the Communications line in the ME Control Panel Add/Remove Programs selection. After the customary re-boot, I tried the Win2000 instructions and ran out of options after the Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications sub-menus. WinME had no Network & Dialup connections selection, only Dialup and that was looking for a conventional analog line modem.

Still no joy.

Can you, or anyone, recommend a way to enter the VPN's configuration as a new connection including ability to enter doman name Internet address of the VPN server and virtual client as well as the DNS and WINS information - it's seems similar to setting up a NIC card on a workstaion only this is virtual through a tunnel or whatever.

Thanks for your advice, I'm closer now but need more help.

DNS and WINS info can be entered using the "winipcfg" command issued from the start>run line.
Although there is no network&dialup section in hte control panel there are 2 seperate ones(a network and a dial up). Have you looked around in these at all?

I will look at this as soon as I can, probably later this week, and will let you know how it goes then. Can I establish a different setting for the VPN in winipcfg? I don't want to make it may main setting and be in the VPN all the time, I would like to go in and out of it as I can do with Win2000 -- when I'm in the VPN it's llke being at work because I'm in the office network.

What you want to do after you have selected the VPN component under Add/Remove is the following:

1. Restart the computer.
2. Create a dialup connection under start > settings > dialup networking.
3. D-click make new connection.
4. Type the name of your connection.
5. Select the drop arrow under device and select Microsoft VPN adapter then click next.
6. Type in your VPN server ip address or host name in the field then click finish.
7. R-click on the connection you just created and choose properties in the menu.
8. Select the networking tab.
9. Choose the TCP/IP settings to enter the WINS and DNS information, and also the ip address that may be assigned by your network administrator.
10. Select the security tab for login information and encryption (ask network admin)then click ok.
11. R-click the connection and choose create shortcut from the menu, then choose yes to create, now you have the connection on your desktop.
12. D-click the connection and login with your information.
