Hi all
As an alternative to IE6 ,I have downloaded Avant as a trial. This launches ok,However I can only get the 'Page cannot be displayed'message when I try to look up a website. Is this a problem with my settings ?.If so how can i use this browser to look up websites..?
many thanks
peter

I've tried Netscape 7 too, with the same problem. Also,I have set Avant to be my default browser, but still view any web pages...HELP!
Thanks
Peter.

Do you use AOL by any chance?
If so once you close the AOL browser you are disconnected. You have to minimize the window as opposed to closing it.

Forget nutscape.I use Avant Browser and Crazy Browser.
The first thing I would do peterp,is uninstall it and reinstall it.If you have the "latest" version, which I believe I do...it's still in BETA form.I have had a few glitches with it,and even uninstalled it,that's why I'm in CrazyBrowser right now.I certainly don't recall having to anything special to connect/display pages. In Avant...Have you gone to Options/Advanced or Avant Options and looked around a lil' bit?It is virtually an IE overlay, using IE's settings while adding some it's own features.

Hi
Thanks for the advice so far,I use NTL Broadband for your info, but still cant view websites.I believe its the latest version of aAvant..any other ideas greatfully appreciated. All I want to do is view websites using an alternative browser!
Regards
Peter

If you have connectivity (can ping out) then there is no reason that I can think of why an alternate browser would not work nevermind ANY alternate browser.

Hi peterp. If you are running a firewall...check the settings to allow the new browser.
-good luck

Hi all
My firewall is set not to load at startup, plus how would I check if I am able to 'ping out'..?
Many thanks as always..
Peter.

Click on
Start
RunType in "command" (no quotes)-hit enter.
In the box that appears type in-
ping yahoo.comSee if you get a reply. If you do, you should be able to browse with anything you like, barring a major software issue that is to say.
Jimi_l

Try-
ping www.yahoo.comor any other address for that matter.
or try-
ping 127.0.0.1to see if TCP/IP is installed correctly (which it should be)

Hi Jimi
Thanks for your persistance.
I got the following:
PING:transmit failed error code 10050
(then 3 sets of replys from 127.0.0.1)then a list of ping stats
Any ideas.?
Many thanks
Peter.

It appears to be your firewall blocking things with some help from ICS. They suggest uninstalling Zone Alarm

Time to test your connectivity, since your failed attempts at "ping" command demonstrate that there is no DNS lookup going on in the background. Basically that means that the browser sends your request for "www.yahoo.com" (or whatever site you want) and contacts a domain name server (running DNS) to convert this to an IP address.
Get a dos prompt up and type in:
IPCONFIG /ALL (then press enter - but note the space between the IPCONFIG and the /ALL)
You should have listed a default gateway IP address and one or more IP addresses listed under DNS Servers.
Tell us what it says...
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark
Ive tried that..this is the response..DNS servers 194.168.8.100 & 194.168.4.100
DEFAULT GATEWAY ADDRESS:81.103.116.254
IP ADDRESS:81.103.116.118
DHCP SERVER:62.252.64.20
DHCP ENABLED:YES
IP ROUTING ENABLED:NO
WINS PROXY ENABLED:NO
nETBIOS RESOLUTION USES DNS:NO
Hope this helps.many thanks for all the time and effort..

Peter

Peter,
OK so you "should" have DNS running and TCP/IP enabled, but you still have a problem doing the lookups.
As before, I'd go to a DOS prompt in order to see if you can actually communicate with the DNS servers and the default gateway server. This time use the PING command as follows:
PING 194.168.8.100 (then press enter)
PING 194.168.4.100 (then press enter)
PING 81.103.116.254 (then press enter)This is to test the amount of time it takes a 32bit packet of data to travel to the server network card, and return to you. Here I have listed the IP addresses of both your DNS Servers, & the default gateway through which all your traffic will be routed.
You should get a response showing you how long the time was (in milliseconds), it will normally send several. Try each one above and see if you get reasonable results back (times of less than 20ms on broadband).
If you get no results back, reinstall NTL as I have seen similar problems with a friend who has NTL broadband, and that cured it because it re-sets up your network connection.
I hope this helps, mail me if you need more help.
Mark

Hi peterp. I was looking through the posts and couldn't tell whether you were able to browse with IE6. Seems like you may not be connected to the Internet. What else are you able to do online...send emails, use messengers, etc? If not...you may need to check with your ISP's software that initially sets up the connection.
-good luck

also since you are using broadband...make sure Internet Explorer is set up to 'Never dial a connection'.
