hi, I tried that suggestion, and installed the patch microsoft suggest, still makes no difference
andy

ok, done it using this option
Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium (Me)
On the toolbar click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
Click Advanced, and select the Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown option.
Click OK twice, and then click Yes to restart your computer.NOTE: For Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, this procedure adds AutoScan=0 to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file. For Windows Me, this procedure adds a Binary value named DisableScandiskOnBoot to the following registry key and sets its value to 01:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystemthanks for the help anyway

See may be your hard drive is developing a fault, so allow it to finish runing the scandisk and surface scan too.
the problem may correct by it self is just that it is developing bad sectors ok!

Andy,
The "patch" you're referring to. Is it the one you found out about at...
(IDE Hard Drive Cache Package)ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly (273017)
...and if it is. Did you check your Registry as it outlines in that same article. What I'm saying... I guess no need to rewrite what the article says :) Just take another look at it, please.
Also, go to Start >> Run >> Type;xqfecheck >> Press Enter or click [OK]
Now, when that opens. Click the + (sign) beside WinME. Look for UPD273017 Windows....ect. ect. Is it listed? Also, does it show any Invalid or missing files?
And I, strongly recommend, you don't leave ScanDisk Disabled after bad shutdown. That's just my opinion :)
Just my 1/2 cents worth :)
I'll Try
p.s. I'll throw this one in also :)

make that two :)
