ok i ave a compaq and for some reason over time it has gotten 6 times slower than when i bought it. Ok i was told taht maybe i need to reboot it so how do i doo that? plz help me
Go to start to programs to accessories to system tools. then go to system restore. Instructions should be there for your recovery disks.

system restore will just bring your computer into a safe mode and you can bring it back to different time.

If your computer is just running slower, why are you asking how to format the hard drive?
You probably are low on RAM, or your HD is filling up. Remove some unwanted programs. This should spped things up.

Well,ram can't be his problem...he says he's got 512,unless,of course he's gotta bad stick.He also says he hasn't or doesn't know how to reboot.ok...he's also in the wrong forum,he says he has XP.I don't know where to start with this one,and I won't until the person that started this thread posts back...

On my PC this contains the system restore utility built into windows me. This utility is completely seperate from the recovery disk process provided by OEM's.
Are you saying that this contains information for using recovery disks on compaq pc's?

NO.
system restore can take you into a "safe mode" From there you can bring your computer back to a different time. Hopefully when it was running correctly.

Thanks, ive only mucked around with a handful of compaqs so i have no idea how they work.
I know they call the recovery disks "restore" disks and this gets confusing with windows me and the new system restore feature.
My windows 95 HP PC.. when you go to create a boot disk in control panel it created a floppy to use with the recovery disk instead of a real boot disk. I know that OEM's do all sorts of strange stuff and thats why i asked.

What about going into MSCONFIG and seeing how many things are loading at startup. My P3 750 256MB RAM was running slow and the user resources would quickly go down as I used my system .Now after eliminating many applications from running at startup thru MSCONFIG, my PC boots up at 94% user resources free . Also defragmenting your H.D. , running scan disk , clearing out your temp folder and cleaning up unneeded stuff off your hard drive , are all steps you can take to improve your systems performance !
