Subject: How do I downgrade WinME to Win98SE?

Comment: Ok, I know that many people consider ME a downgrade from 98SE...LOL! But be that as it may, I had Win98SE & then upgraded to WinME using the upgrade CD. Originally, I had saved the info to restore Win98, but after a couple of months of running ME with no major probs, I decided to delete that folder. Now I want to upgrade to WinXP. For some reason (I suspect the reason is money), Microsoft does not allow the upgrade from 98SE-->ME-->XP. But I can upgrade from 98SE or the "full install" of ME. I realize that a clean install is the best route, but I'd like to give the upgrade a try. If things go buggy, I'll backup/format & do a clean install. So my question is, how do I go back to Win98SE? Or as an alternative, I'm working on getting a copy of the WinME full installation CD. If I was to install this version of ME over my upgraded version of ME, would XP then allow the upgrade? Thanks :)

Reply: (edit)The only way after deleting the restore info is to reformat and install 98. From personal experience, upgrading is very disappointing, and it's much better to clean install XP. In fact, you'd probably be happier if you partition your drive and dualboot 98/Me with XP. There are a lot of games that just won't work with XP, even with XP's compatibility mode.

Reply: (edit)Ger, even though you're the only person to respond so far, I was expecting the "clean install" or "dual boot" reply as the best way to go. But putting the XP installation aside for now, what about installing the full version of ME over my 98SE to ME upgraded version? Will that work? Are there any benefits to doing that?

Reply: (edit)Big Mess, the best way is just copy your data you may want to keep & do a clean install, if you do a clean install your xp will run much better, and if you want to keep me a clean install of windows me is much better and you can use the upgrade windows me for a clean install of windows me.

Reply: (edit)Sue, I'm afraid you lost me at the end. Let's scrap the idea of installing XP altogether & concentrate on my other questions about ME. Like I said, I had been running Win98SE, but then upgraded to ME by using the upgrade CD. Basically what I'm asking is this...is there any significant performance difference between a WinME system that was installed via the upgrade CD vs a WinME system that was done as a clean install using the full installation CD? Also, can I use a full install CD to reinstall WinME on my existing upgraded ME system or will it recognize the difference & not allow me to do so? And finally, if I can reinstall using the full CD, would there be any advantages in doing so? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)The Windows Me upgrade and the Me full contain the exact same system files, so there won't be any difference in performance if you install the full version over the existing setup. I would think that it would change the registry information though and XP would allow the upgrade. I've never read about anyone doing it that way, so I'm not 100% certain. Also, the more software you have installed on Me, the shakier an upgrade to XP seems to be. I would certainly back up any important documents before doing any of this. I only ran with the XP upgrade over ME for about an hour before deciding to wipe the hard drive and clean install XP, but many people have been satisfied with upgrading.

Reply: (edit)Not speaking for xp because I do not have it, but if you want to run Windows Me a clean install is much better, you use the Windows Me Upgrade Disk to install and the w98se as proof or 95oem is ok too, I did a clean install on my sons computer of windows me with my old oem 95 Companion disk for proof, because my nephew borowed my 98 disk, I know this is confusing but have you given up on xp and choose to keep winme, if so do a clean install as stated it makes a big difference. You need to state what disks you have so we know how to help you.

Reply: (edit)XP should upgrade just fine over windows me. It should not matter that you upgraded from 98 to me and now want to move to XP. Thats the whole point of upgrading. A clean install is the only way to go especially since your moving from 9x to NT. Format that sucker and start fresh :).
