Im sick of Windows ME and all its errors so I want to delete everything on my computer and start all over with an empty hard drive in DOS mode and install Windows 98. Isnt there a command you can type in to delete everything and start all over in dos?

*** Make A bootdisk***

Copy: Command.com, Fdisk.exe, Format.com
to a floppy

1. disconnect all periphials except for monitor,
keyboard, and mouse.

2. At DOS prompt: FDISK choose to view partition
information

3. delete all partitions, exit FDISK, reboot PC.

4. Boot back into DOS, at prompt: FDISK/MBR 3x

7. Create one Pir_Dos partition 100% in size

8. Reboot into DOS at the prompt FDISK choose to
view partition information verify partition was created

9. At DOS prompt: FORMAT C: /U

Always boot to an A: prompt

Then use CD rom support and reinstall your
98 OS.

Hi James, my name is Paul. I saw your message on the www.drivershq.com and you seems very upset about the Windows Me. Personally I been using this operating system for about 6 months now, and it has been great for me. The time it takes to shut down and startup is just amazing, not to mention all the new feature that come with this OS. But if you insist on formatting the whole C drive (I guess your Windows Me is in C drive), this is what you have to do. Make sure you have all your Sound, Graphic, Modem and Printer drivers handy before you start anything at all. And you might want to print out this page for reference.

First you have to back up all your important files into your other drive (I’m sure you know this already).

Then make yourself a startup disk (in Control Panel \ Add/Remove Programs \ Startup Disk and create disk into a floppy), if you didn’t make one during your Windows Me installation. Now, try to go to your A drive and make sure this file “Format” or “Format.com”(if you see from DOS) is in the startup disk. If you can’t see it, then you have to go to Start\Search\For Files or Folders and type in “Format.com” and Look in C drive. You should able to find it in “C:\Windows\Command” or “C:\Windows\Options\Install” (the Name of this file is “Format” Size is “49k” Type is “MS-Application”). Now, copy it to your startup disk and make another copy of this “Format” file in your C drive as well (I am not talking C:\Windows!!! I am saying in C: drive).

With the startup disk that have the “Format” file in it, you are ready to format the Whole C dirve!!! Now, you can restart your computer (I hope you have all your vital files backup already!!). MAKE SURE you have your Windows 98 STARTUP disk handy as well, because you will need it later.

During startup, press “Delete” and get into your BIOS. Change the boot sequence to load on A drive first before C drive. Then press Escape and save the setting before get out and you should have your Windows Me startup disk in the floppy drive already. The system will startup again and with the startup disk in, your system will get into a screen where you have to choose a startup sequence. Choose the one that allow you to get into “command prompt” (for my system I have to press “Shift + F5”).

Now you are in “command prompt”, go to C drive and type “format c:” Then you will be ask to conform whether you really want to format C drive, and this is your last chance before you format your C dirve, by doing so you will delete EVERYTHING in it. Press “y” if you are sure and “n” if you want to back out. Once you press “y” and Enter, the computer will do all the formatting for you.

When the computer finish formatting the C dirve, it will ask you to put in some kind of label thing, just press “Enter” for no label. It is good idea to check on the C drive to make sure everything is clear. With “C:” on, type in “dir” and press Enter, see whether it is clear of any file. If everything looks good, then get your Windows Me startup disk out from the floppy drive and put in the Windows 98 startup disk and the Windows 98 install CD into the CD-ROM, then press the restart button on your case.

(This is the part that I can’t really remember, but I think it goes something like this.) After the system has restart, choose “Start Windows 98 with CD-ROM support”, then you will get into “command prompt” (the important thing here is to get into the command prompt, if the method above doesn’t work then you just have to find another way to get into it ). In your CD-ROM drive (I am guessing your CD-ROM dirve is D, E or F dirve, but for this example lets say it is E drive) type in this “e:cd windows 98” or “e:cd win98” and press Enter.(this is depend on the Windows 98’s file name on the installation CD). Now you should have something like “e:\windows98:”, now type in “setup” and press Enter. And this should start the setup of the Windows 98!!! Just follow the instruction of the installation wizard.

I hope everything workout okay for you, and please keep me inform for your progress. GOOD LUCK!!

Sincerely,

Paul
