how does one go about creating a bat file in ME?

my wife wrote a bat file that worked fine on her machine. she created it on her w98, tested it on a fake folder. it worked. she put it in my machine which runs on wME. it does not work.

the .bat file is in c:\windows and this is her file,,, echo on
cd \windows\applic~1\mozilla\firefox\profiles\default.xw9
del cookies-*.txt

she's no slouch in programming, and did it professionally before she retired. i do not know if she changed anything, or HAD to change anything, to make it run in ME.

any help? thanks

depending on what it does, you should be able to just put it in the startup (assuming you want it to run then). If all of the same programs being referenced in the bat file are on both pc's it should work the same

It sounds more like you already know how to create a batchfile (any simple editor will do) but are having difficulty troubleshooting an existing one.

"it does not work."

Yes, well, there are any number of ways things "don't work" - one thing would be to verify the accuracy of the path of the target folder - any error messages?

del cookies-*.txt

Is that accurate? Kind of an odd syntax.

Also, c:\windows\....\Firefox\Profiles\default.xw9

no such folder on my drive - closest subfolder I've got there is 'jk1h4p0v.default'

At any rate (with such a simple batch), try entering the commands line by line from the prompt

No cookies-*.txt on mine either.

del "c:\some\long\path\cookies.txt"

"everything has been double checked

.. not so sure about that - check again

As has been pointed out (twice) the line:

del cookies-*.txt

can't possibly work, and your path seems flakey too.

It's an extremely simple batch file - stepping through it from the command line will allow you to see any instructive error messages

it was something i did in firefox, but nonetheless, del cookies-*.txt is right i think.

a large number of cookies-*.txt(cookies-23,-24,-25,-26 ad infinitum) files are being generated in the stated path

If that's the case, something goofy is going on.

IIRR, Back through NetScape 3x, all the way down to today and FireFox 104, the file has been cookies.txt

You may have some intruderware. If so, better fix that than concoct ever more clever deleting BATs.

well,,,i'll tell you what i did. first, i'm kinda prickly about stuff like unwanted cookies, so i changed the property of the cookie file in firefox to "read only". the reason was, firefox was/is not cleaning up cookies in the options menu. i never mentioned it because there's no point.

while this was ok in netscape, apparantly firefox gets confused and starts to generate cookies-*.txt's.

this happens to be a known issue, btw. be that as it may, i wanted the wifey to create a bat file so that i didn't have to go in manually to delete the cookies.

Why start now?

CCleaner - - as well, there are numerous cookie control settings from within the browser.

'been fun
