Hello again, still looking for answer in my hrs or searching on the internet. How can I do any repairs or fix a problem if winme will not completely load and it will not load in safe mode either, the scand keeps popping up and in middle of scanning , blue screen comes on explorer(im taking thats its windows explorer) caused an error in gdi32 dll.
Problem is,also found out (maybe it has nothing to do with it maybe it does( but they were doing something in the aol with the art. prefernce then computer shut down ok and but on the next start up the scandisk runs because of improper shutdown and also now win doesnt fully load and a blue screen comes on explore caused error gdi 32 dll, she called gateway and they had her try the safe mode with restore , they say no virus and couldnt help after that but in safe mode scan disk stops and crash happens there too.
this is the system and had no problems prior to this one.

Maybe this will help... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q146904&ID=KB;EN-US;q146904

RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, restart your computer using the Windows ME Startup disk, choose Start Computer With CD-ROM Support from the Windows ME Startup menu, and then re-extract the file at a command prompt using the Extract.exe tool. For information about how to extract a file, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I've never used restore.

But things you can do are
Try running scan disk in Dos with a boot disk.
If you installed a program that may have effected windows boot up with a nasty *.vxd files try using scanreg /restore from Dos.

To get into almost Windows you could try editing your System.ini

look under Boot For

[boot]
;rem TShoot: shell=Explorer.exe
shell=Taskman.exe

Rem out the Shell=expolrer and add
Shell=Taskman

this will load windows without explorer

This might work if there is an explorer/internet explorer problem.

You should be also to run restore if nothing else works and you have something to restore.

on the bottom of this page has a little info on how to run things in taskman.

How to Start the System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt (Q279736)

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

SUMMARY

Windows Millennium Edition (Me) includes the System Restore tool, however, you cannot start the System
Restore tool from a command prompt. Because of this, it may be useful to start the System Restore tool when
you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in Safe mode. This article describes how
to start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in
Safe mode.

MORE INFORMATION

To start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in
Safe mode, you can temporarily change the Windows shell from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe:

Start your computer by using the Windows Me Startup disk.

At the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot .

At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini , and then press ENTER.

Edit the shell= line so that it looks like this:

shell=progman.exe

Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini file.

Press ALT+F, and then press X.

Remove your Windows Me Startup disk, and then restart your computer. When your computer restarts,
Program Manager should start. If Program Manager does not start, repeat steps 1-7, being careful to follow
these steps exactly, and then continue to the next step.

On the File menu, click Run , type msconfig in the Command Line box, and then press ENTER.

Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state.

NOTE : After you configure your computer to start Program Manager, you can start the System Restore tool by
typing c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then pressing ENTER.

I once had the problem of not being able to start my computer up all the way because of a corrupted file in the sytem. i suggest you fix it the same way i did. call gateway and tell them your problem again but this time tell them that you want them to help you by walking you through the process of reformatting your hardrive. this process will completely erase your harddrive getting rid of the problem and then all you have to do is have them help you reinstall your operating system. then you can also get some of the othher files that came with your computer with your restoration disk that came with your pc by just reinstalling them. also just thought I'd let you know this will take some time.
