Hosts file no longer works?

Since I got a cable connection my windows hosts file no longer works! Would anyone know how I can re-enable it? In W2K/XP the DNS Client has to be disabled but I can not find it in WinME.

In Win9x you can just edit the "host" file in from a dos prompt.

Am using smartin's hosts file and can edit it OK via Notepad but it does not function or serve by blocking ads?

When you saved your hosts file from notepad did you make sure that you did not accidentally add the .txt extension to it?

I made sure of no extensions, just "hosts" and no other hosts files in the Windows directory. It has to have something to do with the @Home cable connection configuration or a needed modification somewhere because it works fine when I use 56K Dial-up?

Thank you Mike and Rick. It was due to the proxy server via Port 8080 being enabled. Ran; "regsvr32 /u ahiehelp.dll" and it disabled it. Now my window hosts file is back to doing its job and blocking all those unwanted ads and web bugs.
