Hooking up cable modem

I've had a cable modem for 5 days now and still can't get on. The pc techs tell me they didn't install the ethernet adaptor in the PC and the cable co. says they didn't. I surely don't know how. I was told to re-image the PC (MICRON) after the tech hooked up the cable modem, and then run winicnfg. The window that pops up after running the above does not recognize cable modem IP address. I have been flipped back and forth between the PC techs and cable techs and don't know what to do next. Thanks in advance for any help!!
