I have 2 pc in my house 50 ft. apart.I would like to hook them up to 1 cable modem,so they can both be online at the same time.I have them hooked up now but if I turn them on at the same time, the one 50 ft.from the cable modem gets knocked off line. How can I correct this?

You will need a router to use them at the same time.

the reason is cuz you only pay for 1 I.P. If you want you can call your ISP and pay a couple bucks extra or you can go buy a hub for about 50 buck so you can hook up to 5 pc's together, if your runnin anything higher than 98 there is a network connection wizard which will easily set up your network which let's you share your 1 I.P.

Artty,

Mike is correct you will need a router, or as kris said pay the ISP extra for two IP addresses. Be sure you get a ROUTER and not a hub. Unless I am mistaken you must have a router because it masks the other computers connected to it. The router has it's own IP (The one provided by your ISP) and then it assigns IP's to your computers. Pop over to the networking forum of this board and ask for clarification. I have 4 computers on my network and I use a router to allow any of them to browse the web.

Kris, Are you sure a hub would work in this instance? As I said above I think you need the router to be a sort of front man to the ISP. It would be interesting to know.

Your ISP only gives you one address. That's why two machines cannot go online at once. The router assigns addresses to all the machines hooked up to it.

Just another note, if you use AOL this will not work. AOL only allows an account to be logged on one machine at a time. I have two computers hooked up to my router. They can both be on IE at the same time but not AOL. LNKSYS makes a good one. You may find one for about $100-150 using a rebate offer.

Arty,
I have 3 computers hooked via an Asante 5 Port Ethernet Hub and pay an extra $10 for individual IP's for all 3 computers. No problems at all.

Bruce, is that a one time fee you're talking about or a monthly charge?

Mike,
It's a monthly fee, and worth every penny.

I am running:
Comp 1 HP 8670c: Accesses the internet.
PIII 600EB Coppermine slot 1
384M PC100 (3x128)
maxtor 30 GB HD 5400
SB Live X-Gamer
Voodoo5 5500 AGP
HP Ethernet card: access to cable modem @home
Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet: access LAN
KDS 21" 1600x1200
windows98 SE
Norton system works 2001
P2B-VT Via KT133A Pro(proprietary HP mobo - Asus)

comp 2 HP 8765c: second comp for 5yr old son
AMD 900 T-Bird Slot A
384M PC100 (1x256, 1x128)
Maxtor 45GB HD 5400
Conexant/Rockwell audio-modem combo card
Hercules Nvidia Geforce2 GTS Pro AGP
HP Ethernet card: accesses LAN (PIII)
ViewSonic A75f 17" 1280x1024
WindowsMe
K7M AMD751/Via686A FSB 200MHZ (Prop. HP Mobo - Asus)

Since I already had @home installed on my PIII, I decided to continue to use it as our primary computer (amd for son). I purchased the Network Everywhere from frye's (cheap), and a 50' crossover cat 5 patch cable. Installed the NIC into the PIII and connected the crossover to the NE NIC and the HP NIC on the AMD. In Network neighborhood I chose my workgroup and made them the same on both computers (only computer name should be difference). On the PIII I installed Internet Connection Sharing (windows setup- start-settings-control panel-add/Remove Programs-windows setup-Communications-Internet Connection Sharing) follow the wizard make a disk for other computer when prompted. Make sure you reboot when prompted. Make sure you have NetBeui and TCPIP and ICS for each NIC in the system. Enable file and printer sharing. After installation and final reboot, visit Network Neighborhood and verify you can see both computers and their drives and a printer should be setup sometime also. After you enabled sharing of your drives, go to the computer you are adding to the network, dbl click IE and you should be set.

Third party firewall software to protect against hackers and ad-aware or IE6 for cookie control and pop-ups.

I chose W98 SE machine also for my trust in the stability of the OS vs. WinME/AMD.

AVG. DL: 210Kb - 420Kb (max 2 times 1.5M)
Speedguide.net for speed tweaks and registry tweaks.

I have been real pleased with the setup as has my son.

Both systems are used for MP3, DivX, and DVD burning and viewing, although they actually spend more time playing Multiplayer Unreal Tournament with pings 29ms - 180ms on most servers (I play in Phoenix and our Favorite server is located in Chicago on a T1 "Sprint routers are @homes biggest problem sometimes"). 2 members of our clan are in amsterdam, The Netherlands and are using @home and ping 170ms - 225ms to quite a few servers here in the states. DSL vs @home is a preference...I get better DL with @home than I do with DSL (DSL is provided at my business 640/256 and actual DL are high 80's Kb. with an occasional spike.

Send me an e-mail if you need additional information, just don't send me a Virus.

GOD Bless the unfortunate victims of the Terrorist Attacks, may GOD comfort you, your friends, and family.
