came to my house as i would get knocked off aol and internet. anyway they said i needed a new modem. but for there new modems to work i had to have a someone put in a pci etherfast pci adapter. well i said i never had to do that with my old modem . he said well microsoft stop making software for windows me and that everythings done for xp.
i said i wasnt about to pay labor to put in a part when the comp might go out . anyway he hooked up my old modem and its working fine. it just he belittled windows me as a bad system and im suppose to upgrade after i have had highspeed since it first came out.
any way since i have aol already ill see if i have to have that card on aol high speed.
ive been able to do everything with my windows me hp comp. any problems ive just went on comp net and theyve been answered in minutes. any one who gets high speed though
ask when they upgrade if you have to pay for the parts to upgrade to their modems.
if anyone knows about these messes id apreciate any info . thanks

Wel I am not sure if I have understood everything correctly, but I find it starnge that you would need to upgared to xp just so you can go high spee, internet.

High speed dsl and cable modems requite the fast ethern card to sou can connect the modem to it, most mother boards these days have them on board as standard yours does not by the sound of it.

But that is not a majour problem the card fits into the pci slot, boot up windoes install the drivers, from the supprt cd, which will have ME drivers on it, connect the modem, configure it and surf away.

So upgrade to Xp isnot required realy, just make sure that you have all the updates for ME installed. And yes they are still availavble to down load from microsft.

Hope that helps

well see i dont want to upgrade to xp as my windows me works so good and its super fast.
they just want to to put that card in so i can have a upgraded modem. see if my comp was messed up - id have to go buy another as
my job requires a computer. i make maps so i need the high speed mainly i have a lot of maps opened at one time and with high speed i rarely get shut down. its just my cable company didnt like their own modems-- my
co workers are all on aol so i have to have aol also. in my district we cant get aol high speed we have to get high speed from the cable tv. i just dont want to get another comp when i can mess this one up and it always works. thats why i was trying to find out if this cable company is just being lazy or what. my high speed is faster than anyones comp ive seen. the cable company says the ethernal card will make it go even faster but i just dont believe them.
its just a gut feeling that they are not being honest. thanks though but i dont think i could take the tower apart put that card in with out messing something up. i can barely see the buttons to turn comp on let alone mess with stuff inside it.

I dont know as to how your current modem is connected to your computer, so I cant comment.

The internal ethernet card is a high speed inerface between the cable modem and your computer.

These cards are known as PCI 10/100/1000 Ethernet cards. A good quaity one should not cost any moret han $20.

Installing the card is realy easy, find a free pci slot. Insert the card and secure it in the same way as any other cards you might have.

Start the pc and when you boot to windows install the appropriate drivers for it, hook up the modem with the special cable that comes with it, and that is it.

This is the fastets high speed interface you can get, especilay for a cable , modem.

But as I said before just make sure you have your windows fully updated. And if you dont know how to set the card up, I sugest you ask someone wityh some comp knowledge or ask the local pc shop to isntall it for you.

It should only take about 10 minues from start to finish.

Regards

Hello Linda

Regarding a new cable modem, some are better than others. My cable company upgraded mine about 18 months ago and it is a change for the better - but they didn't charge me; just swapped the old one for a new one of different manufacture. (I took the old one to their local office and collected the new one myself). If your cable company is prepared to give you a more modern modem free of charge I would suggest you accept it.

However, with or without a new modem, I fully agree with Janos, an Ethernet Card will give you the best broadband performance and will also free up a USB port for you.

There is really no problem in fitting it but if you are not happy with opening up your computer yourself then take it to your dealer and ask them to fit one for you; I doubt they will charge you for doing that if you are buying the card from them.

As for upgrading to Win XP - Don't.

You say your system is running superfast on Win Me - I suspect you will not get the same speed on Win XP.

I run a flight simulator on-line with Win Me and get frame rates on a 1GHz machine that other 'Simmers' struggle to get with 2.5GHz machines on Win XP.

Final point I would make is regarding your ISP. I would always recommend using your cable company as your ISP. You say you have to use AOL because your colleagues do. Can't see the relevance of that. The Internet is the Internet is the Internet .........

Judging by the number of software providors who publish discaimers on their product's performance if the user has AOL I would be wary of it myself. I have also heard that it's a lot easier to put AOL on your machine than it is to get rid of it!

Stuart

I agree with stuart and thanks for supporting my views !!!

Many ppl bag Me for no reason, I love the thing. When built correctly it runs so sweet its not funny.

And I support what you said about frame rates, Me was one of the best OS from MS for games, ppl just dont want to bealive this, but its true.

I still have ME on a triple boot on my second rig, adn it is rock solid. And I have made this statement before , I am sure the thig runs better on some of the latest technology hardware, than what it did on the hardware which was available at the time of its release.

Nice to see there are some ppl left that still like the thing.

Enjoy

I also find wme faster than wxp using dsl, as to stability, wxp crashes just as often as wme. Rather then coming out with longhorn, I wish they would come out with the bugfree os, but thats 10 years into the future. Janos and Stuart are right on target, I want to hold onto wme because of the dos flexibility it has. This gives us a little more control over the system. Adding or replacing a board is as easy as dropping slices of bread into your toaster, all you need is a screwdriver. The type of board you buy has a different size slot, making the work errorfree, gently push the board upward until it freesup, pull out the plug (or line cord)when replacing or adding a board.
