Hi Mesich,
I saw the above post about switching os from w98 to wme. My old computer at 233 with an amd athlon chip, has the w98 os in it. Crashes are par for the course for the w98. My computer that I am using now came with the wme installed. This came with the full os, I tried the process you recommended to the other post, but mine does not work. I tried a few procedures, renaming the win.com file, rename the windows directory, booting from the diskette, and won't load the wme. A funny thing when I thought I got in, the reply was make sure the h***.sys is installed(can't remember the file name).
I thought you may have some ideas to help me load the wme os with a full cd rather than the upgrade,
thanking you in advance,
frank

Hi Frank, hello everyone,
Very odd that it is not working as I have performed this many times upgrading Win98 to Win98SE using a full version.
I also did this with Win98SE to WinME about 50 times trying to figure out a way to downgrade from WinME to Win98.
Is the message you are receiving related to himem.sys?
Best Regards,
Mesich

Hello Mesich,
Thank you again for your help, I drew a blank on that file, it is himem.sys. It is in the directory, but for some reason when I prompt the compter, it can't find this file. When I revert back to w98, it's back to normal.Have you any tricks up your sleeve where I can fool the computer into accepting the wme os, thanks again, Mesich,
frank

Assuming you can still boot into 98, here's what I would try...
Bootup as normal...go to Start/Search & do a search for win.com...occasionally a program creates a backup...ALL win.com entries must be renamed to Win.old (or whatever you like)
On the next reboot, boot off the WinME startup disk & select "with CD support"...watch the screen for the letter designated for your CD drive. For this example, let's say it's "E"
At the A: prompt, change to the CD drive by typing E: & hitting ENTER, like so...
A:\
A:\E: [enter]
E:\Now, pop in the Windows ME CD...give it a second to spin up...then just type "setup" at the E: prompt & hit ENTER...setup should begin...
E:\
E:\setup [enter]

Hello Mesich and Jam,
I tried loading the wme os about 10 times, it comes back reporting, another os has been found, and is discontinuing the process, and to get an upgrade version of wme, any suggestions as to how I can block the incoming os from seeing the os now loaded in the computer,
thank you for your input,
frank

Hi Frank, Jam, hello everyone,
Start the computer with the bootdisk.
At A:\>type c:
At C:\>type cd windows
At C:\Windows>type rename win.com win.old
At C:\Windows>type E: where E: is the drive letter for the cdrom.
At E:\>type setup
Where does it fail, if it fails using the above?
Best Regards,
Mesich

Hello again Mesich,
It runs a test of c drive, then it runs another test, not sure if its to see what hardware is connected, then reports another os has been detected and to get an updated version of wme and goes no further. I can run the cd without the aid of the diskette, though I start with the diskette. I also tried to download the os from the 9x directory on the cd, get the same results and stops at the same point. I know all these computers do not function the same way and each has a little twist, making it (sic) unique from another companies machine, have my blood pressure medication handy again,
thank you again, Mesich for the follow-up,
frank

I don't understand why this isn't working for you...
I'm confused by what you mean: "I can run the cd without the aid of the diskette, though I start with the diskette".
You need the boot floppy to provide the drivers so that you can use the CD in DOS...to me, that would be WITH "the aid of the diskette"...not "without the aid of the diskette"

Hello again guys,
After renaming the win.com file, I can load the winme os from the cd. My computer dates back to 1997 and has a slew of files and directories listed in the menu. When starting from the diskette, it loads files to c: drive, the cd kicks in and starts the process of loading it's os to the hd. After it screen my hd 2 times, it reports it has found another os and cannot continue, to get the update version of wme. I have found most of these changeovers are "no walk in the park" made so for obvious reasons. I have found the help I have received from this website to be far superior to my isp and computer mfg's tech support, as a matter of fact they were more of a hinderance than help. This why I appreciate the help Mesich has given me in the past and now, and a tip of the hat to you Jam for your help,
a grateful thank you from one who appreciates the valuable help I have gotten here,
frank

Hi Frank, hello everyone,
In the root directory of C: is there multiple Windows Directories, such as Windows.000?

Hello Mesich,
You were right all the time, I found the problem, there was a spike stuck in my head. Jam had suggested to scan for other win.com files, I forgot, a couple of years ago I wanted to increase my disk space since that computer only had a 4 gig hd. I bought a 40 gig loaded the w98 in it and thought all I had to do was connect it and presto, it would work. The computer could not see the os and some at this website suggested to keep the 4 gig in place and use the 40 for storage. I did that, but, never removed the w98 os, now also located on d drive. As soon as I made the win,com to win.old change, the problem disappeared. I thank you for your help Mesich as now I have to find some bandages to fill in the spike hole.
Thank you and Jam for your help, as this problem I created myself,
have a good day,
frank
