Don't believe me go look in your C:\Windows directory and look for DOSPRMPT or just click on start>run and type in DOSPRMPT and there is the same old dos prompt ÜÖ

Isn't that just the MS-DOS prompt which you can still easily access through Start>Programs>Accessories>MSDOS Prompt?

Don't Windows have Real DOS Mode anymore?
Pressing F8 at startup don't seem to mean/do much anymore.

I think Microsoft either got rid of the "Real DOS" or is getting really good at hiding it...I don't know if there is a way to access it without going into Windows...

Hope it is not too hard to find. You'd be surprised how handy dos bat files can be, even in Windows.

Josh is correct, microsoft is trying
to hide real mode dos. That is
because Windows is "Dos in a Dress" and
Windows has no say in real mode.
Windows ME
command prompt only option (F8 boot)
has been removed, and so has the ability
to make a SYSTEM FLOPPY.
the dos command "format a: /s" is no longer
valid. Now try to format a floppy from
windows ME, notice the system file option
is missing there as well!!!!
All I can say is hang on to those dos
floppies, they will come in handy someday.

Getting rid of the ability to press F8 to get into dos was one of the stupidest things Microsoft has done. I use that option quite frequently.

Watch out for this -

I tried it and it locked up my PC - good thing the SYS command still worked from the ME boot disk to restore the files and I kept backups.

Why is Microsoft trying to do away with dos real mode or trying to hide it. What does it hurt? I agree, watch out with the patches, it depends. What might work for one may not work for the other.

from what I understand the new version of Windows due next fall will eliminate DOS alltogether and the WinME lack of real mode is a step toward that. a lot of legacy problems are tied to the old dos. A shame in a way as I can remember the day not to long ago when I could do just about anything with a good batch file. I had a few that were incredibly long with statements that I can hardly remember the variables for anymore. Used to swear I would never use windows, but then again I used to swear by Netscape too... got to go with whats winning. The Internet is one of the things that made windows a popular interface, it does the net really well compared to some of the old command line programs I started with.

While MS has removed the F8 boot benu, I believe if you hold down CTRL just before the ME startup screen is displayed, you will get the boot menu. They changed it because there is no "Starting Windows XX..." prompt anymore, and that confused the people that like to wash their keyboards in a bathtub. :)

As for me, I have had no problems with Windows ME. The only hitch in installation was I had GoBack enabled. I was able to upgrade from Windows 98SE with no problems. I believe this is a INCOMPETENT_USER_ERROR issue, not a WINDOWS_SCREWED_UP issue.

if u want dos in your pc again, just crate a new partiton in your hd, with a dos MBR and install any boot administrator like lilo or BootMagic, then when your pc asks for the system you just have to select the one you want...its easy..and I HATE A LOT MORE MICROSOFT!!!!
