If you don't have a Windows Me cd, don't format using a bootdisk because it will erase everything and you might be unable to reinstall the operating system. If you have a computer with a recovery program on a hidden partition, run the recovery program and it should give the option to start over from scratch as it came from the factory with a working operating system. Recovery program should be in the System Tools folder.

If you are just wanting to rid yourself of some of the extrenuous stuff on the comp. Why don't you just Remove the programs and then perform a defrag. Be sure you know what programs you need to keep and those you can toss. You can and should also clean your temp directory, temp internet files, etc. etc. before defrag.

Getting back to the original question.....you probably just need to enter the BIOS and change the boot order so it boots from the floppy before the hard drive.

no disrespect, but if you don't know the basics of installing an operating system then formatting is NOT for you. there is more to it than meets the eye.

also, if you are inexperienced, stay well away from your system bios.

1. ME startup disk, which you said you have.

2. Start with floopy. FDISK--Delete and Create logical drives or partitions.

3. Escape from FDISK to DOS prompt and remove floppy.

4. Reboot, and start pressing "delete" key and keep pressing until you enter BIOS system setup.

5. Hit right arrow key to highlight BOOT SCREEN.

6. Change "boot sequence" in "BOOT section" to "ATAPI CDROM," which is done by usually highlighting the second device and hitting enter.

7. Insert Dell Dimension Resource CD. Press F10 then ENTER to Exit and Reboot.

8. Choose "Start Computer with CDROM support"

9. At A:\ type format C: /u then ENTER

10. Press Y and ENTER to format.

11. When done, insert ME installation CD.

12. Reboot to ME CDROM Start menu.

13. Press "2" key and ENTER to boot from CDROM. The ME Startup menu appears. Press ENTER to begin setup.

how do you know kristy has a dell?

I read another post here at computing.net about compaqs having the bios on the HD isntead of the motherboard. This is something else to think of before formatting.

Unless you have a retail copy (you went out and bought a copy of windows) of windows me and a pc that isnt a compaq.. formatting the drive is probably not a good idea.
Your PC should have came with a set of recovery disks or the recovery image is located on a hidden partition at the end of your drive. Depending on make and model the instructions for formatting/reinstalling windows will differ.

With a recovery diskset insert disk 1 and restart the computer. The disk should begin to autorun. Follow onscreen instructions to format and recover.
If the disk doesnt autorun i give up. Better check with your PC makers tech support.

I just wasted my time typing this :) i see Ger already pointed these things out.
