Ok, I upgraded Win98 and went to WinME...not realizing that Norton Antivirus 2000 does not fully support WinME. So the auto updater thing runs and asks something about updating the files for its boot disk. I click on yes and about 5 seconds later and it freezes. I restart it and I get the WinME screen, so I press ESC so I can see why it's taking so long. The message says "Please wait while setup updates your configuration files. The may take a few minutes..." I wait "a few mintues" which turns out to be 12 hours because I left it on overnight. In the morning it still says it, I KNOW it has something to do with Norton Antivirus 2000. I've tried to restart it in SAFE MODE but it still displays the message and it says there for hours. Please do not tell me my only option is to reformat everthing! Is there a way to uninstall Norton Antivirus from DOS or run system restore from DOS???

Norton 2000 is not compatible with ME but you have already found that out. Try booting in safe mode again but say NO. Hopefully you will be able to get booted up so you can uninstall.

I tried to start the computer in safe mode but the message still pops up about updating the config file. so I can't even go into safe mode, maybe there is a way to make the computer not update the config file?

Try this: (this is from Norton's site)
if you continue to experience problems during startup after performing the above procedures, then restart Windows normally while holding down one of the Shift keys. This will bypass loading the programs in the StartUp folder. If Windows loads successfully, then one of the programs in the StartUp folder may be the culprit.IF THIS WORKS IMMEDIATELY UNINSTALL NORTON 2000 and to buy Norton AntiVirus 2001. It IS comatible with Win ME.
Hope this works for you

try a scanreg /restore.
boot to a bootdisk.
at the a:\ prompt type: scanreg /restore (note the space between 'scanreg' and the '/')
pick a date before this all started happening.this should unhook the update from your registry and allow you to boot... but you have some other problems... as you're quickly finding out.
best advice at this point:
if you get up into Windows... back everything up you can... and format and start over.second best advice:
if you get up into windows... uninstall ME... uninstall the Norton... reinstall ME.(sometimes a very messy solution... you have been warned)if you still can't get up into windows after a scanreg /restore... you can try uninstalling ME from DOS. uninstal.exe (yes...there is just one 'L') is located in the c:\windows\command folder.
Warning... the above may not work... try really hard to get into windows first.

You could also try a step by step confirmation and only load what you absolutely need to.
once up... you may be able to run a system restore from there.
Whythewolf babe... that just give you the startup options... ie: Normal, Logged, Safe Mode(safe mode is the one that bypasses your startup files), and step by step... just FYI.

Funny my Gateway came bundled with 2000 in NOV. and I never had a problem,I get auto virus defs every Mon. Never had a crash, Just wondering if maybe I have A 2001 beta or what the splash says NAV2000 !!! D.E. RIP :-(

restore by using system restore check point is the best way. Choose the check point restore before the day you update or fix norton2000, then you get the window up. After that, you can uninstall norton2000 and :) buy 2001.

After you get back in to your pc just go to Norton and get the try me version of Norton 2001 and dl it then go get the crack and install it in the Norton 2001 folder. Works just fine. I never had trouble with 2000.

Unfortunately you will need to re-format.
You upgraded from Win98 and now you have an NT regestry. If you installed NAV2000 on a clean install of WinME than you would have gotten all of the features except creating the NAV Boot disks to work. @ your desk top open Norton AV go into options and disable everything close everything and reboot. Now Norton should be out of the picture. Back up all of the data inportant to you mail, bookmarks, documents, etc. Boot with a Windowz EBD or with your Windowz CD. First run FDISK and get rid of that partition, restart then repeat only this time Create a partition. Restart with CDROM support and type SETUP. When complete don't install NAV2000. Norton has improved their software security too. They changed the download engine to exclude previously regestered copies (in case anone is thinking of a warez copy). I reccomend you try a different scanner since all of the Norton software seems to be as buggy as hell lately. Try
InterScan E-Mail Virus Wall, Version 1.72,

I can't get winme to uninstall in dos because of some stupid memory thing. i do not know how to work dos, and I am not about to reformat everything. how come system restore can't work in dos?? isn't the whole point of the program to fix a problem?? its not doing its job if i cant get into windows to run it :-( how do i open it from dos??

there is an article in the Microsoft KB that describes how to run System restore from a DOS prompt. it is printable. print it and follow the directions carefully.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q279/7/36.ASP
you have to change the shell to progman.exe instead of explorer.exe. this will be really different for you. and it still might not work. just letting you know.

Four month old computer here (VERY expensive) and having boucoup problems with ME, including (but not limited to) the Norton antivirus problem. My software package (ME) came with Norton. It took over EVERYTHING, and was a PAIN to get off the system!!! In fact, I was an MSN ISP customer and was having trouble with email. they checked at THEIR end and said my email had somehow become configured to "Norton Antivirus" instead of MSN.com. Weird. I'm not sure if it's norton 2000, or 2001. Guess I'll have to check. Either way, it doesn't work AT ALL with ME.

did you create a ME emergency disk (flopydisk), then you can use it to boost to dos, select help from the disk, then step by step to restore the WinME. I had the same trouble with it before "I don't do Dos too" but now I know since then. Good luck
If you don't creat a emergency disk, then you should ask some one to send you one.

There was a special OEM version of Norton AntiVirus 2000 (version 6.20.04) that works with Windows Me

Norton AntiVirus changes your e-mail configuration as part of it's setup if you use e-mail virus scanning.

For your information -- my friend's new computer completely crashed -- hard drive totally unuseable after updating her Norton Antivirus program (she has Windows ME). She has been told that the hard drive has to be changed out. Dell is replacing it! STAY AWAY FROM NORTON ANTIVIRUS AND THEIR UPDATES. She has only had this computer 3 weeks. Norton prompted with a message that she needed to update and she told it to and since then the hard drive is useless. So far we have found McAfee Antivirus to be more stable.
