Subject: HELP - Need help isolating random freezes!

Comment: Ok, here are the specs first in order from top to bottom: 900 MhZ AMD ATHLON (slot a) oc'ed at 950 ABIT KA-7 (slot a) 256 Megs of Cruial PC-100 Ram (2 simms) Creative Labs Anihilator Pro (geforce 1) Sound Blaster Live (w/ IO card) Dxr3 hardware decoder for DVD drive WinTV capture card Network Card Modem The other week for no apparent reason and without any warning my computer suddenly began crashing at random intervals. When I say crashing, I don't mean the BSOD or .DLL errors but freezing as in the mouse and keyboard lockup, everything stops, and your forced to restart your computer. Ok, I said fine, backed up my stuff and tried installing Windows 2000 instead. Within hours of having it up the computer did the same thing, randomly without warning. So a couple of days ago I reinstalled Windows ME got all of the software, latest drivers (including 4 in 1 via 4.25a), and everything working. Everything is except the same problem keeps reappearing--random crashing. I have disabled PNP OS in bios but again that did not help. Other than that, I'm pretty much clueless what else to do short of returning my motherboard to the manufacturer? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Reply: (edit)You could have a hardware issue. Power supplies do go bad and everything else for that matter. Assuming that you have all of the Windowz updates and current everything short of a faulty or insufficient power supply. Check to see if the mother board manufacturer has a newer BIOS for your system. You can get a ps 300w for $35.00.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the speedy reply. Unfortunatly I already have the latest bios upgrade (08/09/2000) and installed it immediatly after receiving the motherboard some two weeks ago. I'm a little skeptical about the power supply going bad because I spent the extra money and bought a 300 watt ps from PC Power And Cooling. Hmm...btw, here is a list of my IRQ's. Reply: (edit)OK never mind the PS!! You can't run the machine like that. You have too many devices. At best you can share 3 IRQs. First off disable the comm ports in the BIOS so you can steer the modem to IRQ 3. Also you might look at removeing the non essential cards then adding them one at a time. Also set the BIOS PnP setting to NO so you can manage the IRQ's. You might also get a LS-120 so you can free up IRQ6...Specs. are allways good to throw out there since it removes guessing. To further stream line things (you will not like this) buy a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon card to replace your video and TV card. This will give you one more IRQ. I dont know what slot the NIC is in but Slot 1 would be a poor choice. You want the video card to get IRQ11....hope that helps. Simply put take the cards out of the machine and see if it runs correctly if so than you have to do something about the IRQs!! If the machine is still screwed up come back here for the next step!!

Reply: (edit)Try using programs like Norton system works and RegClean to fix registry errors and clean up your system. You have lots of stuff on it and that would probably help. You can buy versions on ebay for cheap.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the help. What I did was undo my motherboard, reattach it after examining it for chips or cuts...then I inserted each of my cards one ater the other (power on, test, shutdown) until everything was working properly. I decided to take out my modem since I don't use it anymore. Anyway, I've been running smooth for the past six hours leading me to believe that this is probally going to be permanent. Yes!

Reply: (edit)LOL! I had this problem too, where ME would lock up my computer several times a day. I finally killed the OS and installed Win2k instead, and have not had a problem since. I concluded that ME is a horrible operating system.
