Hello, I am running Windows ME on a Hewlett Packard, 800 MHZ. I just had a friend install more memory on my system yesterday. Well, it was not until today I went to put in a disk. (it is a CD/Cdrw drive) But the link, icon to my cd drive is gone. When I tried to access it it says the shortcut to the destination is gone. It is mt M drive. Also when I click on My computer icon on the desktop, it only shows, my main hard drive and floppy. It doesnt show my cd drive at all.

Since the memory was installed I ran Nortons system check and fixed those errors and this morning when I realized my problem, I did a system restore to a time yesterday morning before the memory was installed and it still didnt help.

What can I do? Could this be a result of something he did or my own doing when I ran Nortons system check?

While your friend was working on the system, he could have accidently knocked off the jumper on the back of your CDRW drive. Check to see if the jumper is there and check to make sure that the IDE cable that goes to it is attached correctly because it may have came loose while your friend was working on it.

It could be a cable was knocked lose when installing the RAM, but check the device manager first for any problems.

To get to the device manager:
Right click My Computer.
Choose Properties from the list.
Go to the device manager tab.

Is your cd rom drive listed here at all? Is anything here listed with an exclamation point or question mark on it?

Try this: Click on Start > Run > Type in E:\ [or any other alphabet your friend may have specified newly or the one you had before]

If its ok delete the old short and create a new one.

After checking cables check Device Manager to make sure the secondary IDE controller is showing up. If there are listings for your cd-roms in Device Manager and they have exclamation points by them, you might try removing the devices, rebooting and see if Windows recognizes them on reboot. If the cable got jogged loose your cdrom shouldn't show up during the POST when your computer boots. Check not only the cable connection to the CD-RW but also to the motherboard (that's the one that usually gets pulled out a little). If the secondary IDE controller is gone from Device Manager you'll need to post back on this forum for further help.

You have no more restore points earlier than the one you already tried?

i was using windows xp and everything was fine. but i didnt like xp so i removed it and put windows 98 back. after i was done i had to install everything over including my secondary IDE which is my cd burner and my cd rom drive. in the device manger it says secondary IDE but it has a ! or ? there. i donno was up. the driver is fine. it says its the best updated one. whats the problem. and i donno how to get it back. someone help me. thank you.
