HI All..
I have a DEll 4100 Dimension,WinME and use MSNExplorer.I was trying to load software..Adobe Photo Deluxe 4.0 and I got no recognition of it coming up..some part of NSWorks window popped up saying it was monitoring the installation or uninstall of a program and since I heard nothing, I closed the window...
I noticed the bottom area where Quick Launch and System Tray have been have NOTHING..there..no vertical bar..nothing..no hovering of mouse bring up double arrows or anything..
I don't know whether to shut down or not.Don't know what rebooting will do..Would you give me specific help...I am a beginner..
Thank very much...

did you disable your antivirus before installing the program?... try to use "the system restore" to the time before it happened

I can't recall if I did disable NAV.I know I went to and then got involved with LIve UPdates and doing that..I don't know.
I can't use System Restore..I just
installed GoBack..but haven't any idea how to use it..I was going to get help with that
ASAP, but this came up...
Isn't there any other way..What happens if I shut down? GoBack became the default.

Ok...this "should" be simple to fix. I say should be, but computers are sometimes unpredictable. 1st, if you have a status bar at the bottom of the screen, right-click the mouse on it and you should see a menu pop up and on, probably on the top should be a heading called "toolbars". Click on it and your "quick launch" tool bar is probably unchecked. Make sure you check it if it's not. 2nd, go to your Start button, then select the "run" selection. In it, type "msconfig" (without quotations of course" A window will come up with quite a few tabs on it. Click on the "startup" tab and it will change to the items that startup when you boot your computer. The items that are checked are the items that boot up; the items that are unchecked are the items that do not boot up. Now you should see an item called "System Tray", if it's not checked check it. Also if you notice some programs that are on there or duplicate programs such as "LoadPowerProfile" that are checked you can uncheck them. This is completely safe because when you uncheck something it does not uninstall it, it just diables it...so if you ever want something back just go back to the run menu and type msconfig and go to the startup tab and check it back again. Now afer you do this click the Apply button, then after your computer reboots it will notify you that you've made changes to your startup. It wil ask you if you want this message to come up each time you boot your computer..check the box that says no...because you will get tired of seeing this if you don't and if you ever want it to come back up again...anytime you change something in the msconfig (startup) it will come up again but will not come up one you check the box until you make changes again. Now if for some reason you do not even have a "Start Button" at all, you can get to to going to this folder using Explorer C:\Windows\System and then there will be an icon called MSCONFIG. Sorry for being lengthy but I wanted to pretty much cover everything. A good book to get from beginners to advanced is one called "Windows Me Secrets" by Livingston and Straub. U can get it at www.amazon.com or www.bn.com or probably through any good book store. Have fun with this. It's really not hard. I'm sure you can do this. One more thing...if you want to increase your system performance you need to disable the System Restore feature! It takes up about 8 to 10% of your memory. This does not sound like a lot but it is and it makes a noticeable difference. If you want to know how, you can either email me or you could get that info from that book I suggested as well.

Holly,
You have a lot of good advice here, the only thing I can add is that I *had* Go Back over a year ago and it worked very good, but I noticed that my hard drive was eaten up fast. So just keep an eye on your drive space.

WOW..This was an amazing response..I have been trying to figure out the best way to respond to your input. I do not know how..I took EACH thing..starting with Miro's anti-virus disabling check..Then Jeff..I went to your tutorial..was incredibly nervous bu tso greateful it was available...about to watch it and a helper came on IM..like you all here..and spent a lot of time with one nervous gal.. with me doing the things Sithiger suggseted..only I had not gotten this response yet..
I was not able to get a menu from any Status bar at the bottom of the screen. I had to go to misconfig via the windows key on my keyboard inbetween CTRL and ALT.
Then I did those very things suggested..System Tray has never been disabled thus far.. I was most interested to learn about LoadPowerfile as I do have two
entries and I was told to keep them both checked..I presume you would have me check them again after taskbar returns?
I went through Startup and unchecked.I did not reboot..I followed Jeff's advice and then did my first GoBack revert HD back to 11 hours prior and then had some problems with Clean Sweep running in background..it wanted to monitor some installation that was not going on then..but had been at the beginning of my whole problem..I just closed it..then at this point, restarted.. everything was fine.
However, the experience of being able to get help here has amazed me...help to this extent..and I have received valuable information for next time..and will have had this go-around as my trial and error run.
I took note of System Restore and disabling... but did want to mention I have never had success with startup menu disappearing no matter how many times I check the box telling it not to show me message again...I get it each time I start up.Always have..
I am going to email you, Sithitger, about
the System Restore as I have a question..thank you VERY much for that offer.
I will get the book Windows ME Secrets..I know I have one of that title..I'll have to look and see if this is the author..
BEing new..when in a CRisis..I often need
first hand help...even IM because I get so concerned...then I do pretty well...following directions..and I post here..THEN I learn it.. THEN I am able to read and absorb/digest more... I know that is backwards..but It is the best way for me to learn...for right now...plus
and referral sites one might direct me to.
Please continue to give thorough instructions...NO MATTER HOW LENGTHY..this is what really helps a beginner..I cannot stress this enough...IT was excellent..all the info..from each..and it all added up to much learning for me...I hope for other beginners as well.. Following this post I am going to respond here once more with a great WinME tip on how to keep the System Tray locked..given to me by the gentleman who came on IM last evening..someone might benefit from it..
EVERYONE here..Thank you so much...
GEorge who often helps folks here(and he would surely says vice versa)helps me..advised me when he went on holidayt to.."POST AT THE
BOARD...You'll get good help there"..
I can't wait to show him these responses
upon his return.... Thank you again...
and have a wonderful day today...

win.com. I will include the following link. The site is there with other information, but I did not see this particular hint at this time.. It was there in May of this year.
Good Day all.. Holly B.

http://www.activewin.com/winme/index.shtml

Great tip for WinME users on LOCKING the
TASKBAR..in the follwing article..
It originally appeared from a site known as Active

"********** THE TIP **********

Lock your Windows Me taskbar in place

Have you ever accidentally moved or resized your taksbar and then
had to waste valuable time and energy moving it back to its original
size and location? Windows Me contains a feature that enables you
to lock your taskbar in place so that you won't be able to accidentally
move or resize it.

Right-click on the Windows Me taskbar and then choose Properties.
Select the Advanced tab, and in the Start Menu And Taskbar list
box, scroll to the bottom and beneath the Taskbar heading, uncheck
the Enable Moving And Resizing option and click OK. Your taskbar
is now fixed in place and will not move. "

Sorry Folks..I made an error in Response #7. Anyone reading it, Please begin the response where it says "GREAT TIP FOR WIN ME."
When you finish those 3 lines..just go back to the beginning of response and you'll see it connects.. I aplogize..I had to go copy and paste the link..and upon returning did not realize the page had moved..
I notice my link did not turn blue for anyone to click on and go directly there..I have always copied and pasted and succeeded this way..but it did not work here..but you see the name of the site..Activewin.com..
