Hello,

I have a hard drive that has bad sectors. I need the steps to isolate them please. This is the way i am doing it as I only have this CD and no floppy drive at present.

1. I insert a Windows ME bootable CD.
2. Select the "Boot from CD" option at startup. Then I get the A:\ as the CD is bootable and has a RAMDRIVE.
3. Enter the chkdsk c: command and then press Enter. Now instead of starting to scan the drive, it gives me a prestored Result information that is displayed within 1 second. In short, chkdsk is never run at all by the computer. In addition, I believe I have to use the "chkdsk /f" command to detect and isolate the bad sectors. How do I run the chkdsk command successfully on the C: drive? Please gimme the exact command.

4. I believe the fdisk /mbr command can also take care of my woes as it will rewrite the FAT. Can it? Please gimme the exact commands that have to be run at the command prompt, in addition specify the particular prompt I need to use (e.g A:\ or C:\) for a command.

Thanks in advance.

Unmesh

You are going to need to make a bootable cd, search the site here as this has been well covered....right now it doesent seem that you need to mess with the MBR just yet or anytime later.... Seems as though your goal is to clean off the hard drive and start a new....when you make that cd maybe take a moment and gather up some anti spyware, virus, trojan, etc. that will run in DOS as there will be plenty of room on the disk....might come in handy in the future.....

Hello LinuxOS2,

I fail to understand ur replay. I said I am already using a bootable Windows Me CD. I just want the exact steps to run chkdsk in the computer using this CD.

Is there any one else who can help me out on this?

Sorry thought you may have been more familiar with the steps that are needed, I will try again, first problem is that you don’t have a floppy ? you may want to save your self some grief today and in the future, get one as it would come in handy right now, and here's how go to bootdisk.com and download a boot image, create the disk and boot from it, run the programs you want from a real DOS prompt, wipe the drive clean of everything crudded up on it right now and start a new, that is what you want right?
So what we have is only a CD to work with so lets try this, somewhere on a clean machine that can burn a CD you will want to create a "BOOTDISK" hint NERO would be your friend right about now, from there you want to only create something that is going to boot from the cd-rom and leave you at a dos prompt (either search more on this site or maybe try a google search for what we are talking about)
if you look around a bit you are going to find a step by step guide of what you want and I know for sure it has been posted here before, the mention I made of the other files was only to help you today and maybe one of your friends in the future, this disk your a going to create can end up being a nice thing to add to your bag of tricks....Just make sure that what you put on it is meant to be run in DOS and not be dependant on Winbloz, don’t worry someone will come along and leave a link to something that will set you better on your way if you don’t find the time to dig it up from here yourself....read some other threads that mention how important it is to have a floppy drive around even in this day and age....

When you have fixed the sectors keep an eye on things.
If there are a lot of them it could be a sign that your HD is about to die.
