PLEASE tell me that you can help! For a while (about a month) my DSL has been EXTREMELY slow so and the past few times that I've booted my computer up, I get this message that says "Wininit.exe missing/can not load" or something like that. I did a search on Wininit.exe and found that there's a virus that goes by the same name. I did a search on my computer to see if I have wininit.exe and I don't, I have wininit.ini. Is there a difference? I'm pretty stupid when it comes to the technical aspect of computers (obviously).

I did a scan of my c:// drive using McAfee and it didn't find anything...

ANY help would be appreciated!

Also, what directory is wininit.exe or ini supposed to be in? Windows?

Thanks!

You should have both wininit.exe and wininit.ini
I had this problem when I removed system restore.(did you used that to?)
I explained here how to get it back:
look at respnse 7 (first part)
For the dsl-thing, try removing the dsl-modem from the device manager and reboot to reinstall it to redetect it and istall it. Be sure you have the latest drivers (from the manufacturer) when deleting the modem.

Good luck
Johan

Johanovitch,

I did what you said and it didn't work. Now I'm getting some message in German (?) when I boot my computer and it's still telling me that Wininit.exe isn't there. I found a place (http://www.kazaa.com) where I can download Wininit.exe but I don't know where I'm supposed to put in on my computer (directory). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Mariah,
Can you write that german message down and post it here. I speak Dutch and that's pretty much the same (If I see it, I can understand parts of it, somethimes the whole phrase. It's possible that it is Dutch and not German. People that speak engish, always think something is german when it somethimes is dutch.)

Did you download winninit.exe from Kazaa?
I would be carefull with that. (I only use that to download movies)
The thing is that you have wininit on your computer, but it's in a .cab-file. The file should be in this file: c:\windows\options\install\win_17.cab
I think winzip is able to handle these files, I prefer to use winRar. if you can extract 1 file, you can extract wininit.exe directly to c:\windows. If you don't know how to do this, just make a tempary folder somewhere and extract all files to that folder. Then you can copy wininit.exe to c:\windows and delete the tempary folder.
But if you folowed the steps that I explained in the link that I posted above, it should already be unpacked and it should be OK.
Post back if you have more questions...

Johan
by the way, you don't need to send me an e-mail to let me know there is a response on my post. I use "my computing.net", so I'm notified if there's an answer to something I posted. Just thought I'd let you know

Mariah, i did send you from my work email (starting mvadovic....) the Wininit.exe file. It is scanned for viruses. You will copy it to C:\WINDOWS subdirectory. Post also the message you got, if it is in german i will translate it for you.
