Help! - Can't get off 'Safe Mode'!

Specs: ?, ?
Hopefully this is the right forum, I'm not the most technical minded creature I'm afraid. : (

I would be so very grateful if somebody could help me with this problem.

I had a electrician in the house a couple of days ago, who switched off the electrics while not realsing that I was using the computer.

Ever since switching back on, I have found myself in 'safe mode', and I am unable to get back off it. I do not know why this should have happened, because the computer has been switched off at the wall before and this has never happened at all.

This is very annoying, because the text and graphics on the screen are appearing very large, and the graphics are diminished and colours are severly limited.

I have tried restarting the computer, while holding down the F8 key, and then tried to press '1', which should have switched the computer back to 'normal' setting. ('safe mode' is option '3'), however, this was ineffective and I am still on this safe mode, despite repeated attempts.

I have looked in 'Device Manager', but there are no problems indicated by red crosses.

There must be a way to get this machine off safe mode and back onto its normal setting other than use F8. Could anyone please tell me how to do this???

I sincerely hope that I will not have to have the whole system wiped and started all over again, because I have already had to have this done twice due to viruses, and I have a lot of important information saved, and it would be nothing short of devastating if I had to lose it all.

My hunch is that this is a simple problem to solve, I just don't have the know-how to solve it.

Please, please could one of you technical wizards out there help me out? I would be enormously appreciative because I am at my wits end trying to work this one out.

The computer is still functional and I can still use the net, but it is so annoying I simply cannot go on with this 'safe mode' in place, and I am totally confused because I seem to be unable to switch it off by the normal means.

Please help!!!

I thank you lots in anticipation of an informative response from anybody kind enough to help. : )

Are you getting the message that you're running in Safe Mode? It's possible your graphics got hosed when the machine was turned off. What happens when you right-click the Desktop and go to Properties? Are you able to change any of the settings?

try pressing Ctrl instead of F8 or
in safe mode run msconfig to see if ther's
anything there that forces your computer to
boot in safe everytime

hello there!

Jennifer, thankyou so much!!! You have just made me a very happy bunny!!! ( :

You know what? It seems I must not have been running on safe mode after all, it just looked exactly liked it!

I went onto 'Properties', and as it turned out the colours were set to '16 bit' rather than '256 bit' and the size was set to '640 by 480 pixels'.

I honestly thought that I was on safe mode because it looked exactly like it, so I didn't even consider the settings, I wouldn't have even thought to have looked there. I could have sworn I was on safe mode.

Thankyou again, you're a gem!!! ( ;

Thankyou also for your response, you guys are really kind. ( :

Sure - it's only Safe Mode if it says so in the corners

"'16 bit' rather than '256 bit' "

Not quite - that'd be 16 colours or 256 - "bit" means something else again.

You should be able to get more colours & resolution than 256 (aka '8 bit colour')

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true
