Whenever I walk away from my computer which I have set to ignore all power saving features other than turning my monitor off after 15 minutes, when I come back my HDD is being accessed continually. I have noticed that if I press SHIFT to turn my screen back on the HDD is still being accessed but there is definatley nothing running. I even hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager and there does not seem to be anything running that would be unusual or even be accessing the HDD. While the task manager is open the HDD stops. When I close the task manager the HDD will continue until I move the mouse at which time the HDD stops and returns to normal. I am running an Intel 550 with 80GIG HDD and 384 MB RAM.

ANBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS??????

One possibility is PCHealth, as it runs a monitoring function every 10 minutes, but it doesn't show when you press ctrl--alt--delete.

Can you post back what you have running on startup? You can run msconfig to find this out.

If it's not PCHealth, then it's probably System Restore.

Also check start/programs/accessories/system tools/scheduled tasks.

Some utility programs tuneup and sort your program files when the PC is idle so that the programs start better. Certain settings on Norton, for example, can be doing this.

Also, visit http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/14062.html and look especially at point 9 and visit the sites mentioned.

THX for all the great feedback guys; however, let me throw another screw into the mix. The constant HDD accessing happens even if the computer is waiting at the windows login screen for too long with no mouse movement. In other words, the Start Up programs have not even been loaded yet. How is that for bothersome!!!

I would still VERY much appreciated any and all new suggestions. THX!!!

Also some programs still load when you are at the login prompt.
