HD DMA box won't stay checked

Every time to try to check the DMA box in Device manager for my hard drive, I get an error message saying that DMA might not be compatable with my hard drive or controller, but I know it is. When I reboot the computer, it is again unchecked. It used to stay checked, and I can't figure out what happened to change that. I have tried re-installing windows, clearing the CMOS in my bios, and every other extreme measure I can think of. My bios is set to allow DMA, my hard drive allows it, and the microsoft test available in their knowledge base shows that my hard drive allows DMA. I'm at the end of my rope. Any suggestions?

Hi Chad. I had same problem with my HD. After much frustration, I downloaded and installed "IDE Tool" from VIA website. This tool has its own facility for performance enhancement. Only good for VIA chipsets though. Maybe other chipset manufacturers have similar tools. Regards, Blueheeler.
