Hardware install hangs

Windows ME hangs during new hardware install and reinstalling of drivers... I understand more people have had this problem, but what is the solution? (and the cause?)

My system: Pentium III 800 mhz, ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard, 256 mb SDRAM (133 mhz), Maxtor Diamondmax+ U-DMA100 (7200 rpm) hard disk (40 gb), Iomega ZIP CD-R, ASUS DVD/ROM, Soundblaster soundcard, ASUS Geforce 2MX video card, Win ME.

Try to install the driver first then plug in your new hardware.

try to install step by step,after the recomandations of Microsoft.
First modem
2 sound
3 network
etc

Yes, I've got Norton on my system - not a good idea, as I've understood from several posts.

My system came pre-installed with most of the hardware. It's when I try to install new stuff on top of it that things start to get strange...

take a look in the c:\windows\inf folder... it is hidden... go to folder options to unhide it. if you see 30-50,000 extra files all starting OEM(a number).inf and having no size... you have some deleting to do.
