i would like to thank everyone in advance cause i know you all will help :)
ok after i do a normal shutdown at night by going to start\shutdown.I get up the next morning and my hard drive light is on.Sometimes when i push the button it boots up normal.Sometimes it goes to a black screen for the normal or safe mode.Sometimes it wont boot up at all the hard drive light just stays. But the green light above my hard drive is NOT on.So i have to unplug it and wait 15 min plug it back in and the Orange light is still on but it will boot up.Also if i get a freeze up or i just normal shutdown i have to wait 15 min before i turn it back on. is that normal? Any help would be much appreciated :) i just wish i knew why it was coming on! i found something similar to my problem on a board at hewllet packard they said it could be macffe anti virus but i dont have that on my computer i have norton so i took it out and still have the same problem. :( it never did this before. I think it started when i got my dsl (westell modem). But im not sure.It could have been still doing it before i dunno plz help me all you smart ppls :)

Wow, Angela, when you get a problem you get a doozie, from what you said it sounds like the modem is waking up your computer, but that seems like only part of the problem, You may getting some hardware conflicts, I think the first thing I would do is to unplug the modem and do a system restore back to before the modem install, leave the modem out for a day or over night and see if it makes a difference. another thing to try is go into safe mode and shut the computer down from there, then boot into safe mode again, shut it down again to see if the shutdown problem still exists. You didnt mention about virus scans and spyware scans. Post back if none of these things helps.

In response to reply 1 i have taken it to the shop but i think my computer just isnt listening. he said everything is ok.
in response to reply two I will restore back to before the modem and try that because the safe mode thing did not work.I shut down and tried to reboot and it did not come up. Another funny thing is that i can remember since the first time i got it, it always took 15 or 20 min before i could boot up and that was when it was brand new.I will be back in a day and update you and thank you very much.

OK, let us know in a new post, just say re:hard drive light or something to that effect. it certainly sounds like even when new it had something wrong.

Sure sounds like something is wrong on the system board of the wires to the led's and start switch are plugged into the system board wrong or shorted. The electronics on the system board could be bad. I have seen HP boards do strange things like that and have to be replaced. They develop problems where voltage from external connections from displays, printers or modems "leak" back into the system, forcing you to unplug the system for 10 to 15 minutes before it will start up again.
So make sure none of the attached boxes have power supplied to them when the system is off. Keep in mind that printers and many USB attached devices have power applied to them all the time, even when they are off, and this voltage can leak back into the system when it is powered off.
You could also open up the box and make sure none of the wires from the system board to the front panel leds and switches are shorted to anything, and that they look like they are plugged into the correct place.
Short of replacing the system board, you could get a power extension block with a switch on it and plug all of your system devices into it, then use the switch on the power block to turn all power off at night after shutting down the system. Better yet, get a small UPS on sell some place and use it and its switch, then you have protection from short power failures. Just make sure to only use the plugs that are controlled by the switch.
