I just cleaned my hard drive with an application called dustbuster that I found at Nonags --http://www.tusafe.com/nonags/index.html

I used it and it cleaned 500 meg off my drive and it does not list what it cleaned afterward. Has anyone else ever used this? I have used others that do not "scrub" this thorroughly. I know ME accrues a lot of garbage even over a short period of time but this seemed excessive. All in all, the system works fine--nothing seems to be corrupt.

What is it about ME that itaccrues so much memory onto the hard drive?

Window has a complecated data management that when u delete a data, the data can be restored using certain soft recovery ... To wipe completly the data out from u HDD, theres certain soft that can do this ... one of it just mentioned early by this post ... Others are Norton WipeInfo,BS6 etc etc ... Certain company and government use these tools to completly delete their sensertive and confidential files from hackers recovering it back and nowing what it is ... Others pips just use these soft for freeing up HDD space and for better performence ...

Hello, this is Tom, I posted a question about a program to clean up hard drive. I used dustbuster and it says it deleted 1156 files, and gave me 300 mbs of disc space. Everything appears to work fine. I had a bunch of missing shortcuts in documents, it cleared all them out. I just did it about a half hr. ago, If I notice anything "bad" ill post and let you all know. So far thanks for the advice!.....Tom

I just wanted to say that after I used dustbuster I defraged my hard drive, I had just did it last night. Anyway after dustbuster it looked like swiss cheeze. After defrag I ran tests on PC Pitstop and got one point over my previous score. Its been about 2 hrs and if anything my comp. runs a little faster than before. No Problems, I think its a really good program. If anyone else has any feedback please reply. Tom....

There is an alternative in the form of Window Washer, which not only shows you what it is deleting but you can also specify what not to delete (plus it's in English).

I use it roughly once a month to get rid of cookies etc.

I'll be your Huckleberry!....I got dang near 3/4 of a gig back...My system runs faster, and so far no sign of anything wrong...So far!...I will most certainly let you know if something fails to operate or if something vital is missing..Still, I wish it would delete to the trash bin or something so I could look over what it dumped...No complaints at this time, at all!

Just so you know, Dustbuster deletes every "Readme.txt" on your hard drive.

It's a fair guess that HAL 8000 never used Delindex.bat. Also, does Dustbuster delete Index.dat files?

RM, you are so right, I have not used your Delindex.bat yet..I do have it down loaded and am planning on trying it..I have been useing "cleanall", and I delete index.dat by hand...DB does not clean index.dat....I don't think I have ever reread a readme..I thought I was doing a good job of getting rid of them upon instalation..Guess not..
Maybe I'll (we) will be sorry in the long run for useing DB, but at the moment, it looks glorious..

http://casper.wintricks.it/english/index.html

DustBuster 2.6.2 is a garbage file removing utility for Microsoft Windows operating systems. It searches for junk files and temp files that are of no use and are just taking space on your hard drive. Based on a "fuzzy logic" scanning technology, DustBuster cleans over 700 different types of useless temporary files and directories in a single click, detecting and deleting all these unneeded garbage files automatically. This will increase hard disk space on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. The integrated SensibleScan search engine does not interfere with system files or installed applications: it gives you the freedom to clean up disk space simply and securely in no time, enhancing your system's performance, so you can focus on what's important to you. Comparative chart

DustBuster analyzes in full automatic mode the content of your hard drive, and finds and deletes a wide range of files while safeguarding the integrity of the operating system and the installed applications.
No configuration is required as DustBuster is developed for reducing the interaction with the user. Enjoy the power of cleaning on Windows 98 Second Edition, Millennium Edition, 2000 Professional and Server, XP Home and Professional. Please make sure you are not using any program listed in the Compatibility blacklist. DustBuster version 2.7 conforms to the operational standards established by Microsoft for the operation on Windows XP: a further strong guarantee, although the complete compatibility with the new operating system is already guaranteed with the version 2.6.1.

This is from Dustbusters' "Warning.txt":

-Is it true that all the files with extension .txt will be removed?
DustBuster identifies and removes README.TXT and EULA.TXT, whose proliferation on a hard disk is unacceptable. Statistically these files are ignored by the user, so they can be eliminated without problems. Almost all other .TXT files will be ignored.

This DustBuster, maybe the cat's meow, but for those thinking of trying it, give it a couple of days for erg57, Tom, maybe Col now, others, and myself to report back to you all..This could save you from reformating..Remember, there is no undo file with this...

by the by, I have run it five more times and drfragged. Defrag takes forever agter doing this because as one saidf earlier, your HD does look like swiss cheese.

Hi RM,
How do you find E.I.A 2...???
I find E.I.A 1 to work better..
Version 2 seems to take longer when you hit
restart...I think V 1 is easier for beginners.
You may disagree, you usually do with me..

I haven't tried it yet. My system runs fine without it.

Disagreement on fact or principle is one thing, but ad hominem arguments because of disagreement is quite another.

I like this forum for its differences in experience, expertise, and even temperament and sense of humor.

I am willing to take the heat for mistakes in fact or attitude, but I think flaming someone because we don't agree with them generally, personally, or otherwise is not right. But, hey, I have no control over that, do I? And, IMHO, cross thread flaming sucks, as in "because you didn't like what I said about... [in another thread] that's why you don't agree with me now." BS.

Certain subjects lend themselves to certain answers, although there are differences of opinion about that, too. Look at this thread:
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/20700.html

And look at responses #12-16 here:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/105218.html

Set ’em up!

Can’t we all just get along?
