Have you tried running Scandisk?

As spirit says, run a defrag. You may have 6 gig but it may all be in small fragments. If you have too little unfragmented space left you may find you have to "burn off" a cd or two of files to even get defrag to run.

Hey guys

Thanks for the tips Defrag wouldnt work but Scandisk found 5+gigs of space too laden with errors to use (i never realised errors could screw up that much space) scandisk fixed it and its all good now thanks for the suggestion :)

Sure - that's a common disk error (misreporting free space) and usually easily corrected.

Defrag?? It's not really the Holy Grail - sure, it's part of good maintenance, but the drive must be error free first.

Glad it all worked out.

Be sure and keep backups of important things, if that drive is heading south!

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Most likely due to a logical error rather than an indication of a physical defect, but in any case, backups are always good
