hard disc failure

hi. for 2 days now on boot up my screen starts flashing "hard disc failure may be imminent, back up your data now" and then to continue press f1. has anyone any ideas on what i should do. i have not been having any other problems.

Backup your data onto something other than the faulty hard drive. Don't wait till it fails completely

i have backed up everthing. but do i wait for the system to pack up or do i have to have a new hard drive . evrthing is working ok exept for this flashing warning.

You get the message from the SMART feature built into the hard disk and enabled in the bios.You can test the drive with the bootable diagnostic/installation diskette from the manufacturer and check what errors the programs finds and corrective work that can be done on the drive if any by this same program.Good luck.

to get rid of the warning message, boot into the BIOS and turn off the Smart Drive utility (if a available option) then find out what brand of hard drive you have and get the drive checker from that manuf.'s website. The drive checkers will usually tell you if your drive has problems and can sometimes repair the errors found.
