this is a funny trouble for which I cannot find a resolution. I do a lot of music editing. Prior I used to record on audio tape and then upload on my PC via the audio input (line in on my PC) and my music editing software. Now I do this via my Iriver MP3 player where I record it on that MP3 and then I just upload it on the PC and edit it.I have not used the audio (line in) therefore for some time.
Recently I tried to use the audio line in....and it did not work!! I cannot record either on Windows sound recorder...nor my sound editing software. However via the IRiver MP3 player it's fine. First I thought that maybe the sound card is HALF defective....and I have two...a Sound Blaster 16 and a generic plug and play. I tried both...NO CIGAR!! Then I changed slots...still NO CIGAR!! I then downloaded the updates sound card drivers for BOTH from the internet. ...still NO CIGAR!!
When I access Device Manager...and look up Sounds...and System......ALL say the "the devices are operating properly". I configured all my sound editing software to the appropriate sound cards....NO CIGAR!! The settings are all proper. Now I am thinking that perhaps a file has become corrupted in the registry....which I accessed. There is a yellow question mark on the file SOUNDREC (and many others like WPM etc)...now whether this means anything or not I do not know. Has anyone suggestions?

... I would recommend that you give up cigars
As a point of interest: this is the WinME forum - your stated OS is Windows 2003 Server, and, if that's the machine in question, then you appear to be in the wrong forum
Maybe try General Hardware or the actual 2003 Server forum
