Got a problem, half my icons have gone in the control panel, including add and remove programs.
Can anybody help me?

If add and remove programs is missing i take it that your problem isnt the little view all control panel options link on the left.
Im no expert but the first thing i would do is run a virus scan. Then if no virus turned up i would give system restore a shot. If that dont work post back and someone with more experience will offer advice.

You can do a "Find files or computers" for *.cpl in the windows directory. (They should be in windows\system)
If you get more cpl files than show up in the control panel, then there might be some weird setting like the office2000 option to show only the most recently used items...
cpl files are the actual control panel applets. You can double click on a cpl file to open it and see what it is.
Hope this helps at least a little

Greetings,
I had the same
problem with most of my control panel icons missing. Its relatively simple to
restore the icons. Simply go Start>Run> type in edit control.ini and then hit
enter. Now initially the screen will be blank. Go to File>Open and at the top
you will see a field to put in a filename. Type in, assuming C:\ is your root
directory :) C:\windows\control.ini This will open the file. Now for me it
had at the top in brackets [Don't load]. All I did was delete [Don't load],
saved it and was able to have all my control panel icons back.
