Hi. I am running Windows ME with numerous programs on it. One night, I turned on the computer and ME stopped running. I see the splash screen and everything seems to load until the GUI. Instead of seeing the cursor and the Windows interface, I see a black screen and my keyboard is locked. Pressing reset to reboot, I let the machine run Windows in safe mode. Scandisk automatically runs and starts scanning my hard drive. About 3/4 of the way through, Scandisk fails and my keyboard is locked yet again.
Has anyone ever seen this problem with ME? Right now I am thinking that there is a serious physical error with one of the sectors in which some Windows files are stored. But, based on stories I've heard about ME's headaches in the past, could it be something wrong with the OS itself?
OVERVIEW OF SYMPTOMS:
- ME's GUI does not load up except in safe mode (get a blank black screen with locked keyboard)
- ScanDisk freezes 3/4 thru of scanning HDIf you have any opinions or remedies, please reply. Thank you.

I guess for an opinion. it could be, possible, maybe a corrupted msdos.sys file. but that's just an opinion. probably not a good or accurate opinion but it's an opinion :-)

boot with a startup disk.
a) Type sys c:
b) type scanreg /restore and pick the latest date the system was working.
c) if that doesn't work, type scanreg /fix

How old is the hard drive that the OS is installed on?
You can download Disk Manager from IBM's website. Install it on a working computer and you can make a boot disk that will let you test your hard drives for errors.
Windows ME doesn't use a MSDOS.SYS file.

Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File (Q118579)
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Windows Millennium EditionSUMMARY
The Windows Setup program creates a file called Msdos.sys in the root folder and sets the file with the Read-Only, System, and Hidden attributes. Unlike the Msdos.sys file in MS-DOS, this file is a text file. It contains a [Paths] section that lists the locations for other Windows files (such as the registry) and an [Options] section that you can use to personalize the boot process.

thanks RM. everyone tries to make me feel like I have a very unique OS.
I guess that could be true. I did get mine from aliens or at least they showed me how to mod it. *chuckles* ;-)
