greyscale printing poor

I ran out of color so I went to greyscale. If I print an email it is ok but I tried to print a black and white escher drawing and only the darkest parts showed up. I don't think I have an ink level monitor on this computer but do you think the black ink cartridge is low? Its an HP deskjet 930c printer.
