Subject: Goback error!

Subject: Goback error!
OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: Pentium III, 512MB
Model/Manufacturer: Gateway
Comment:
I have recently encountered a HUGE problem. Everytime I turn my computer on, Goback starts to load and then says "Please wait", only to give me an error message 5 minutes later (error 0x1) saying that my system has become unstable and I need to restart, and the cycle repeats. I found a patched Goback that does not exhibit this problem but I need some way of bypassing Goback to get into Windows ME to disable or uninstall Goback.

PLEASE HELP!

P.S. - Reinstalling Windows is NOT an option, I need everything on my hard drive!

Did you try safe mode?

I can't use safe mode because you can only get into safe mode after goback loads...see the problem?

I have also tried boot disks but I can't get into the Windows ME system (or at least not yet)

A boot diskette will only boot to a DOS prompt

GoBack is a well known source of grief - you haven't mentioned which version you have, but there are some instructions for removing v2.2 using DOS

Okay I did that (which is also what symantec's website says to do) but when it brought me to the Goback utility screen no window came up asking me to disable or uninstall Goback, and after I waited for 10 minutes a message came up with the error "gb_genlog(181)"

PLEASE HELP! I REALLY NEED THOSE FILES!

Well, 'Please Help' (no matter how many times) isn't going to change anything

Don't know really - it's atrocious software, and can be very difficult to uninstall when it goes South - - you may end up slaving the drive to a working system in order to recover files

'Maybe' (and I'm not positive on this) you can rewrite the boot record of the hard drive by booting with a floppy diskette and entering:

fdisk /mbr

.. but I can't guarantee - it could conceivably make matters worse

Maybe this set of instructions from Gateway will be helpful - particularly the 'unhook GoBack from the master boot record (MBR)' section
