I read from here and other sites that you can get rid of IntelliTXT by adding some lines to your host file by going to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. The problem is that I think this only applies to other versions of Windows b/c I went to my drivers folder and I couldn't find a file named HOSTS. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

HOSTS is a file of 'banned' websites. As I understand it, Internet Explorer looks here first and if the site isn't found then it goes to look for it on the Internet. If it IS found, IE does not on the net but looks at a non-existant 'place'.... I can't remember much more... Spybot will install a HOSTS file when you click 'IMUNIZE'... other programs can also do this. My hosts file is in c:\windows, (you looked in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\).

If you right click this file and select 'opens with' and select notepad, you can edit it. I would try this on a copy of the file first incase you mess up. Infact, you should save a copy of the file so you can replace it if needed. I took this file out of it's directory to see what happened and I ended up with loads of porn pop-up's. I put the file back and everything was OK again.

I don't think it's a standard Windows file.
Also it does not have an extention.

To see if you have the HOSTS file, click on
start - search files & folders - type HOSTS and click OK.

Sorry if I'm not very clear but I thinking of a bottle of wine......

Sure - the HOSTS file is in c:\windows on DOS based versions of Win (95, 98, ME) and you can block intellitxt with it.

Otherwise, the Opera browser seems immune, and Firefox users can use the excellent Adblock extension.

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

Wow! I never knew such a beautiful thing as a HOSTS file existed. I tried looking for it on my computer and I actually couldn't find one so I followed Abnormal's link to mvsp.org and downloaded the host.zip file, which created a HOSTS file with an updated list of banned websites & ads included for my computer. Now, not only is Intellitxt gone, but also the majority of ads & pop-ups I used to get when visiting websites. Thx to everybody for their help; U made me a very happy camper :)

If you have Spybot installed try having a look at the HOSTS file for that - should be in the spybot/includes folder, labelled hosts.sbs. Open it with notepad & you'll see the thousand or so sites which it lists - quite interesting.
