want to get rid of window that pops up at start up saying 'unable to run unknown start up application check shortcut for correct name and location be sure application is properly installed'

How do I do that? And which app/s'cut is the culprit?

Thanks Pat

I'd start by looking at your shortcuts in the "Windows\Start Menu\Programs\STARTUP" folder. Check their validity. Also, check to see that you actually want all those programs to start up on boot, which uses system resources.
