I'm trying to fix my friend's computer that was built for her by a friend of her father. The computer was installed with Windows ME, and we use AT&T Worldnet as a Dial Up Connection.

After the computer has successfully booted, anytime we start doing anything, most of the time using the internet, an error message pops up onto the screen every two minutes. The border is entitled: "GetLastError" and the actual message only reads "Access Denied." We press okay, and we go on doing what we were doing before, but a minute and a half later it returns.

It doesn't appear to be affecting the system, but it is pretty darn annoying. I've tried deleting the Client for MS Networks and reinstalling after rebooting a thousand times, that didn't work. She has the necessary DLL files.

Does anyone know how to fix this!??!

Thanks! Steph

It's a programming error. Which means... it's most likely a badly written program or driver loaded in the background.

Check to see what's running in the background on this computer. Try running without the startup group and see if it gets rid of the error.

Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
Choose selective startup.
Uncheck Load Startup Group Items.
Click apply>>ok>>reboot.

Now test. Did the error disappear? If it did... go back to msconfig>>startup tab. Your culprit is in there somewhere. Do some tests by selectively starting the items up (I usually do five at a time if I'm flying blind) and rebooting to test.

Good luck! Post back with your results. I'd love to know what's causing that.

I found out what it was on my computer. A program called PCTVoice was causing the bother. It is related to my modem driver but my modem works fine without it. Thanks very much for your help newgrl. You have saved my head from exploding.
