Game pad problems

For the first time in a while, people actually paid attention to my hints and bought me a few computer games for Christmas!!! So I dug out my Gravis Game Pad Pro and then realised why I discarded it in the first place.
Basically I can only get Fifa 2003 to recognise it. I know some games only work with certain game pads but even the ones that acknowledge support won't function properly. And the last straw came when I loaded a retro copy of Quake II. The soldier guy just wandered around in left-handed circles until he got fragged and the console message read "Joystick is unbounded". Obviously I've tried calibrating it etc but nothing seems to have any effect.
Can anyone help? (It's no wonder PlayStations, XBox's and GameCubes are so popular if PC's which are technically a lot more powerful can't even play games properly!!!)
ps. I plug my gamepad into a Videologic Sonic Fury soundcard but I've tried it directly into the motherboard, it makes no difference.
