freezes after directx 8.1 install

My girlfriend just now installed DirectX 8.1 on her Windows ME machine. It asked her to restart, she did, and now it just goes to the windows bootup screen and stays on it. We tried to boot into safe mode, but it does the same thing.
It runs totally fine normally, and i've not had problems with DirectX 8.1 on any other machines. She also had installed some DivX codecs since she last rebooted the machine...that's the only thing different she can think of.

If you have a pci soundcard, remove it & restart your system. If you have both pci & mainboard audio, make sure mainboard device is disabled in bios. I have had the same problem, and found that older soundcards / drivers are not fully compatible with direct x 8.1 The best thing to do in that case is to stay with Direct X 8.0a You cannot uninstall direct x 8.1, so if you are able to boot up with no sound card, then you would be best to back up your files & reinstall your system.

there is a small program out there called 'direct x remover' it removed my direct8.1 without any problems but i would only use as alast resort.

You could just do a system restore to a point prior to the 8.1 install.
Any new version of Directx can give trouble, depending on a system's configuration.
I've found that it's a good idea to create a restore point prior to any major upgrades.
