Hello all
My system is freezing all the times. the mous moves though.
I have re installed WIN and IE. but no help.
I have installed a new motherboard proir to this . it dosn't look like a software issue,
is it over heating? or is it something in the mainboard (Gigabyte)athalon 1gig.
SOME TIMES IT FREEZEZ OR I SHOULD SAY IT TAKE ITS TIME TO KICK TO THE NEXT COMMAND. uP TO 5 M.
Please help.

update the agp and ide drivers for the motherboard.
switch the role of your pc from desktop to server. for faster access speed,
right click my computer -properties-performance tab-file system button-in the drop down box -typical role of this computer ,change to network server.
look in your motherboard manual and
follow the settings for optimum speed
settings for bios/setup.
which gigabyte mobo do you have?
some pc's do better with 98 then me.
but with lots of tweaking and updating all
drivers ,possible even moving cards around in the pci slots, getting a better heatsink/fan
for the cpu. me will work like a charm.
could also be conflicting apps running.

Remove all of your cards except for the video adapter. Turn on the machine!
Out side of having no network or internet or sound, run the system.
Does it operate w/out freezing up now??

TimeRider, i dont have any bias towards or against any of the chips... my bias is strictly against windows ME... but i dont think that Joe's problem is windows ME related so i stay quiet
Regards Miro

make sure the power supply is rated to
handle an athlon. usually 250 watts minimum.
and the biggest and best heatsink/fan
for that heater of a processor.http://www1.amd.com/athlon/power

Powersupply is key with thoes from what I hear.Although I have read a 300 watt one is the way to go.Also you may want to remove the nic card if it has one and its not using it.The comp will go into "creeping jesus"mode looking for a network all the time that it cant find

Hey Miro:
A long time ago in a thread far far away . . . you chewed me out and told me not to make people feel guilty about their hardware. I think I was taking a shot at Compaq at the time.
Take care and be safe

Thanks to all for a good advices.
I have fixed the problem, and for other to see, here what it was:
THE DARN FAN for the CPU was one weak Peice of crap, I changed it and double fanned it, my temp. droped from around 134, 140 to a good 93 on idle and 107 110 when active.
actually I think the old cpu went bad because of this.
I'll try some of the other advices to speed up Pc.
NOW ABOUT THE ATHALON ^ ^

You get the idea, I like my PIII even MyPII
for a simple reason that got nothing to do with speed, ITs THE DARN MONEY I SPEND TO REPLACE it after only less than a year of use.
PS. I have my pII for 4 years now, never a problem. so I personally rather have a safe (PINTO) That take me to my destination,
than a (FERRRI) that I can't offord to replace its spark plugs evry time it CRASHES.
Joes
